maybe Abramoff has become a better person
he sounds like a changed man:

This week:
"Words will not ever be able to express my sorrow and my profound regret for all my actions and mistakes," Abramoff said. "I hope I can merit forgiveness from the Almighty and those I've wronged or caused to suffer."

December, 2001:

Nearly as shocking as the sums was the coarseness of the e-mail messages, especially given that Abramoff was a devout Orthodox Jew who presented himself publicly as a man of conservative values. About one tribal client Abramoff had written to Scanlon, ''These mofos are the stupidest idiots in the land for sure.'' In another e-mail message he wrote, ''we need to get some $ from those monkeys!!!!''

Money was always the imperative, the language of his desire strong enough to make the 46-year-old father of five sound like a frat dude in a beer ad: ''Da man! You iz da man! Do you hear me?! You da man!! How much $$ coming tomorrow? Did we get some more $$ in?''

2. You left a few words out of that quote:
"Words will not ever be able to express my sorrow (at being caught red-handed) and my profound regret for all my actions and mistakes (especially leaving a paper-trail of emails, etc.)," Abramoff said. "I hope I can merit forgiveness (i.e. a pardon) from the Almighty (G.W. Bush)-- and those I've wronged or caused to suffer (deserved it for being stupid monkeys)."

6. Only because he got caught
Changed man my ass. It's only because he got caught. I do give him credit for not pulling a DeLay cry baby stunt and going from judge to judge etc. and cooperating.

7. I will reserve my opinion of Abramoff until he get out of prison.
If he proves he is a changed man after he is out of prison for 10 years, I will agree.

10. Republicans understand one thing: power
Abramoff is just the typical bully mentality, either at your throat or at your feet. Or like State Dept colleagues said about John Bolton, 'he's a kiss-up, kick-down kind of guy'. They're nice and supplicant when they have to be, cowering in front of power. When it comes time to fuck up your life with nobody to answer to though, he's got a smirk on his face.

Abramoff is just the prototypical nasty, sneering, low-ethics type of college Republican who managed to get himself into the Republican political money-making machine at an early age and whose lack of ethics, combined with his lack of general decency as a human being, got full throat at a young age. Making millions whoring for right-wing politics in your twenties and thirties is the Republican version of 'civil service'.

Just a nasty right-wing frat boy caught and sent to the dean's office. Changed man? Sure, the same way, the only way, any Republican changes - when they get caught out and their circumstances change.

11. Better person??
The Fast Rise and Steep Fall of Jack Abramoff
Washington Post 12/29/2005

Abramoff and his crew busted the College Republicans' budget with a 1982 national direct-mail fundraising campaign that ended up "a colossal flop," said Bond, then deputy director of the party's national committee. He said he banished the three from GOP headquarters, telling Abramoff: "You can't be trusted."

Shortly thereafter, Abramoff was running Citizens for America, a conservative grass-roots group founded by drugstore magnate Lewis E. Lehrman. Abramoff was in frequent contact with Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, the Reagan White House's Iran-contra mastermind, about grass-roots efforts to lobby Congress for the Nicaraguan contras, according to records in the National Security Archive.

One of Abramoff's most audacious adventures involved Jonas Savimbi, the Angolan rebel leader who had U.S. support but was later found to have ordered the murders of his movement's representative to the United States and that man's relatives. With Savimbi, Abramoff organized a "convention" of anticommunist guerrillas from Laos, Nicaragua and Afghanistan in a remote part of Angola. Afterward, Lehrman fired Abramoff amid a dispute about the handling of the group's $3 million budget.

Abramoff also worked on behalf of the apartheid South African government, which secretly paid $1.5 million a year to the International Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit group that Abramoff operated out of a townhouse in the 1980s, according to sworn testimony to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
