Does anyone think Olbermann has been muzzled?
I realize the mining story is big and current, but we've had all day to absorb it. And isn't that Rita Cosby's job (yeah, she did some job)?
Aren't there any other stories that deserve attention?;)

5. Yes, and he's focusing so far on the media coverage
of this tragedy.

Good for him.

Oddly, there was an audio glitch that- to me, conveniently- deleted the original message the reporter (I think it was Costello?) was about to say came from one of the people at the beginning of this horrible chain of events- the message from "the guy that started it all", to use a euphamism.

It was just.... a convenient audio glitch from the point of view of certain involved parties.

11. Big story?
Well, I gues its been made a big story by the media....but in the grand scheme of things, bigger than Abramahoff? Bigger than the Gaza strip decaying rapidly into anarchy? Bigger than the constantly overwhelming news of attacks, assasinations and corruption flowing out of IRAQ? Bigger than the increasing drumbeat towards hostilities w/ IRAN? Bigger than our own government snooping on us? Bigger than the increasing doubts and questions re: Diebold nad voting machines? etc. etc.

While certainly a tragedy for those directly involved, and I don't want to minimize their pain or loss - as far as its total effect on the people of the world, it is minimalist.

Its essentially MSM putting infotainment content of other peoples pain on display because it is a simple story to tell and requires little to no effort on their part.

13. I think it was basically a human interest type tragedy
until the media component came into play. Now probably the MSM would like to forget about that aspect of it and the big story is the total buffoonery of the MSM.

Going on about the tragedy of the misinformation given to the families, but avoiding mention of her role in that misinformation, of course.

How does she stay on the air? Doesn't anyone else find her grating? I don't see how the quality of her "reporting" makes up for the annoyance of her voice and her bouncy delivery.

12. It's an important story because the Bushites have gutted mine safety
standards and crushed the unions. Mining is dangerous, but this mine had numerous safety violations and nobody did anything about it. And a unionized work force never would have tolerated the violations. It IS crass to blow this off as a too bad, shit happens situation because maybe these guys wouldn't have died if somebody had enforced the safety rules.

Let KO cover the immediate tragedy now and then come in for the Bush-kill as time goes on by exposing BushCo's gutting of mine safety for the benefit of the owners. This is exactly where the Dems should go after the funerals are over.

43. It it a big deal!
Yes people die and accidents happen however, please try to put yourself in the the shoes of those involved. In today's world of the never-ending sterile service jobs and telemarketing we forget that others have to work hard physical to make a decent living. Yes some of these men chose to be miners because they loved it , it was in their blood but so many others did it to earn a decent wage. They do it to get over the hard times or just until they get ahead or until they can find something better. One year turns to 5 then 10 and before you know it how can they leave a job which sometimes pays 3 times what they get at another.

My grandfather worked in the coal mines in PA pretty much all his life. When my DA DA as I called him told us the stories of what he did and and the conditions he worked in I still remember 35 years later wondering why and how he could go back each day. But as I grew up and found out more about him and his life I began to understand that with an eighth grade education and a large family to support he did what he had to.

My heart, prayers and tears are with those families. They were just like my grandfather doing what they had to do to provide a better life for their families with a limited educational background and a tough ecomony in a depressed area of this country.

May they rest in peace and may their families find strenght in knowing that their husbands, brothers, and sons and fathers were strong proud men.

47. "People die." What if it was one of YOUR relatives?
I'm sure every one of those families is sick of it too, and wishes they just had their loved one back.

No one is sicker of a tragedy than those experiencing it. You might try keeping that in mind.

You can always change the channel. They can't.

And I, for one, don't think Keith gave us crap.

It was a double tragedy and his network was part of the problem. One of the reasons we love him is that he explores all sides of the issue. There was a lot of news associated with this story, and it took a long time to cover all of the angles.

He'll be doing a story on Sharon and Abramoff.

52. Not paranoid--They ARE out to get me... heh.
Well, given the number and magnitude of events/cover-ups we've witnessed, it's almost hard (if not downright unwise) to ignore all potential conspiracy theories...

Even so, it would seem a rather far-fetched notion to imagine some group chose a mine-explosion in order to distract from the current political news... Still, it's not at all hard to imagine that those who control the news media aren't just happily selecting whatever real/random news that presents itself to serve their purposes. So, nobody caused the mine tragedy, but someone did decide to exaggerate the news coverage. Then again, how can you take a run-of-the-mill tragedy and quadruple the coverage? Well, how about having the media report false hopes to the families and so cause a firestorm of recriminations. Works pretty well to divert attention from Abramoff and company...

Down the rabbit hole, no... tripping on something that might've been a rabbit hole, perhaps.

If he's made to do a story, he will make a fuss about having to do it. This is not the case.

He does his job better than any other newscaster, so have faith that he will cover what is unfolding in Washington. I personally have some interest in this story as my dad is from West Virginia and my grandfather and many other relatives were miners.

This is a tragic story and coal miners do a job for this country that most people wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. What happened here needs to be told, especially as has already been stated, Shrubco and his people have screwed with the Unions and safety issues. They are our fellow Americans and we should show some compassion for what has happened to these families.

50. You said it, Wolfie.
This is the guy who questioned the Ohio vote long after everyone else gave up on the story and accused people like him of wearing :tinfoilhat:. This is the guy who ripped the government on all levels--but especially federal--a new one for its bass-ackwards response (or lack of it) to Katrina. This is the guy who had the cojones to say that smoking kills and people should not do it after he did it for 27 years himself and almost got cancer.

Why is it that every time he reports on the same story other news outlets or journalists are covering...with his OWN brand of quiet integrity...someone's got to ask if he's only doing it because he's being forced into it, or forced to avoid reporting on something else?

Exactly what does he have to do to prove he's worthy of the respect so many people have for him here, and not just another member of the MSM "whores"? Sometimes I wonder.
