7. From the link
"Here sat a man with a burden. He knew he faced "an irresolute body; that he would be opposed by the powerful, wealthy, Tory element among the members."

Sounds like Republicans.

11. Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chain
"Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?"

"They tell us, sir...that we are weak, unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature has placed in our power.

For something over 200 years old, it reads very familiar those feelings. That patrick henry was an original blogger! :-)

12. and this...
"Mr. President, it is natural for a man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

From the same fellow that said
From the same fellow that said: "it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope"... that is, to close their eyes to the unpleasant truth of what a serious situation they're faced with.

Being in a similar situation, we'd better not take advantage of the luxury of thinking the situation isn't all that serious...

10. I used a related Ben Franklin quote in my LTTE today
about the spying:

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security".

15. I like the Zapata quote, too...
"It is better to die on you feet than live on your knees!"
--Emiliano Zapato

I've been explaining to my daughter that when your liberty is intact these quotes are just boring things old dead guys said, but when your liberty is in jeopardy it's time to remember them and take inspiration from them.
