Why are you a Democrat

I was at a meeting last night and the question was asked. I responded that I was proud to be a member of a political party that was and is standing for social and economic justice. A party that brought us the 40 hour work week, student loan program, social security, the GI Bill.......

Why are you a Democrat

It brought electricity and phone service to
rural area, against the wishes of private industry
and Republicans in the 1930s.
Their opposition delayed, by several years, the delivery of
services to my homsteader (1911) Grandparents.
They raised a family of six for thirty years before having electricity.
I remember their dislike for Republicans quite clearly.

I've been a Democrat since I knew there was a choice.

Why Am I a Democrat? Why? Because my core moral values tells me that I must give back to my family and to my community when and if I can. I can so I do.
My moral values tells me, too, that inclusiveness has priority not exclusiveness.
My moral values tells me that individualism does not rise above a societal need, want, or necessity.
My moral values tells me that one person is strong but many persons, together, are stronger.

Most importantly, my moral values tells me that if Jesus were alive today, he would be a Democrat. And, as a Democrat, he would want to continue the Separation of Church and State that is found in our constitution.

the Democratic Party is a wonderful party that tolerates diversity. That's true no matter what is portrayed on the internet or the media. The Republican Party is trying to come off that way, but I think they have a long ways to go.

I also think they're the party that keeps people being helped out when they need it. Democrats don't think of it as hand out. Those are about my core values too. I think they solve problems better than Republicans.

Seriously ... I became a Democrat because I honestly believed they were the party that best represented my point of view. I care about people - ALL people of every race, religion, sexual orientation and economic status - and I always believed that they did, too.

However, after they failed to even ATTEMPT an Alito filibuster, I had every intention of changing my affiliation to "Independent" - I even downloaded the forms from my state's web site - but as I read the instructions, I came upon a paragraph that said, "You will no longer be able to participate in any Democrat primary." Of course, I already knew that ... but for some reason, actually seeing those words in black and white, made me reconsider. I figured I'd feel even more powerless as an Independent because I wouldn't be able to vote against incumbent DINOs in the primary. Besides, my Senators did the right thing concerning Alito, so I wanted to have a voice just in case a DINO challenged them in the future. :-)

Is that a good reason? :)

I guess I keep hoping that the election this November will change the balance of power and give the Dems a chance to act on the social justice beliefs that we have in common.

for other people. I believe that that's what Democratic values are all about - helping other people.

this country and one stands for greed, corruption, taking away individual rights,throwing taxpayer money away on unwinnable wars for the sake of imperialism, and siding with corporate interests. The other, in a perfect world, would stand for the rights of the ordinary citizen, equality, justice, peace, and promote laws and programs to benefit all members of society.

I'm under no illusions that the Democratic party is anywhere near the party I'd like it to be, but it's still better than the assholes on the other side.

I'm not racist, sexist, homophobic, or bigoted, because I care about others, because I think war is bad and peace is good, because I don't even like Bush let alone see him as the 2nd Son of God, because I believe in fairness, because I don't hate everyone who is different for me, and because I believe democracy is better than facism.

the lutheranism didn't stick- i switched to atheism...but they let me keep the moral compass- which i've kind of distilled down to: treat everyone else just how you would prefer to be treated(unless of course, you're a masochist).

i've never understood how any person who claims to be a Christian can be anything except a liberal, and in this country- a Democrat.

I'm a Democrat because, in this country, Democratic Socialism
and the Green movement hasn't taken off yet. If they ever do
take off, then the Democrats will be way to far toward
Corporatism for my taste, and they would need to move
strongly left or lose me in a heartbeat.

The welfare of human beings is far more important to me than
the welfare of multinational corporations.

After 25 years as an independent, I was tired of the choices on my ballot and wanted to participate in choosing them. Since I never vote republican, and since, historically, the democratic party is, or was, closer to my pov, I registered with them.

After 1 experience with primary campaigns, I was still unhappy with the choices on my ballot. I'm not sure what difference it made.

If the Republican Party was the liberal party, I'd be Republican.

I don't like, and certainly don't trust, politicians of any stripe. A Political party is merely a construct to advance ideals. The Democratic Party has been the "not as bad" wing of the Capitalist/Nationalist oligarchy for decades with a brief break in '72 when it actually stood for something other than promoting itselt and winning power.

i cant really find a single reason to be a republican

Joined the party because of Paul Tsongas--supported him in the primaries.

Liked his message about EVERYONE taking a hit to reduce the national deficit/debt. At that time, if I recall correctly, there was fingerpointing going on as to who would bare the brunt of economic policy designed to balance the budget.

on edit: hung around because I liked Bill Clinton and have stayed ever since...

NOT corporations.

Because I believe in freedom for all Americans, not just the ones who are white Christian men.

Because I believe that religion has no business in our government.

Because I believe sustaining the Earth and the creatures who live on it is more important than making a profit from its resources.

Because short-sightedness exists in my eyes, but not my mind.

I believe the working man should get the breaks in society, not the Rich or the Corporations.

I like to visit National Forests and breath clean air.

I think we can build a better future.

I believe in balancing budgets.

I believe in open Government.

I could never give a valid reason.

I was a repubican by birth but became a democrat through culture, awareness, information and knowledge.
