Poll question: Democrats who abandon the USA for foreign shores?
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776

2. Other
Realize that labor is a global commodity - and go where they have to to best provide for themselves and their families.

3. Cowards and drama queens
Once we fix this country, we'll remember who stayed and fought and who ran away. That kind of thing should be considered if these "refugees" try to come slinking back to America.

11. Thats like saying
That if troops leave Iraq it will cause civil war

YOU can wait around to see if Bush declares marshall law
I dont plan on waiting that long.
The 2006 elections will tell me all I need to know. They are the last chance we have to save the constitution

If my employer tells me tomorrow that i've been considered for transfer to another country, I will accept it eagerly

22. I guess it was cowards and drama queens, then....
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 09:30 AM by theHandpuppet
... who left the British shores to found colonies here in America.

I guess it was cowards and drama queens who left for Canada rather than fight a war to which they were morally opposed.

I guess it was cowards and drama queens who fled Germany in the thirties. They should have either stayed and gotten sent to detention camps or joined the Nazis. Thank god my old professor managed to get a seat on the last free train out of Lithuania.

Each person much choose their own path and their own way to fight.

4. LOL!
abandoning Liberty and Freedom? In good old Sam's time that would be applicable. In these times it is called escaping a fascist dictatorship. Apples and Oranges my friend.

Many have threatened, but I have not actually heard of anyone doing so.

who went to Canada in 2005. I also know of at least five familys finishing plans to leave within the next year. Now that I think about it there are several folks on this board who have left.

7. The jews who left Germany in the 1930's were the smart ones.
I have no idea what's down the pipeline for this country. But if the shrub reinstates the draft, I'm leaving with my three children. And I'll call it wisdom, not abandonment.

9. Other - I don't think it is anyone else's place to judge
I may stay here because I would personally feel that leaving equates with giving up - for me. But I would NEVER presume to grasp another person's reasons for leaving, and I would NEVER judge them for it.

10. People have always migrated to lands of greater liberty.
Newsflash: That just doesn't happen to be the United States anymore. Haven't y'all noticed? :eyes:

My maternal grandparents and my granduncle and grandaunt all migrated to the U.S. from Norway between 1915 and 1919. The U.S. offered greater opportunities and greater civil liberties at the time. Today, I think they might've gone the other way.

24. Yep. That's the rumor I heard.
I also heard that the source of most immigrants to the US throughout the 1800s and early 1900s were monarchies and authoritarian countries. We've been coasting along on the myth that we're "the land of the free" ... and it just ain't true anymore. Virtually every western European nation is now more democratic and assures a greater degree of individual liberty, free of socio-economic oppression, than the US.

14. I'm sure many would, if they had the economic means to do so....
...it's easy to tell someone, "like it or leave it". But if you don't have the money to get out or set yourself up in another country, how's that going to happen?

Personally, my wife and I would be on a airplane flight tonight out of here, and never look back. And before all the reactionaries chime back, all I've got to say is, if you want to be our benefactor, set us up in a foreign land, pay off our debt, and send us on our merry way, we'll love you forever!...:loveya:

16. Oh yes, cause we should be the ones that determine where others live
we should send out a posse to imprison these people who have the audacity to live their own lives, and live where they want to - the nerve of those people! How dare they live outside the US! Who do they think they are? No "real" American would ever live outside the US! No "real" patriot would ever take a job outside the US! Only traitors would do such a thing!

Everyone knows that people who move out of America are only doing so to gain wealth! There is no other reason to leave the US! And when they leave the US, everyone knows they put on chains in their new country - because everyone knows America is the ONLY free country in the world! Nowhere else on earth is free. Nowhere else on earth is as great as America! America is the only country in the world worth living in!!

ROFLMAO

19. "Patriotism is the most foolish of passions and the passion of fools."
Schopenhauer said it and I fully agree with it.

The USA was, briefly, very briefly, a beacon of freedom and liberty. Up until 1789 when the founders signed a constitution that continued slavery. It's been downhill ever since.

23. Abandon?
We all have different tolerances and when we can't tolerate anymore we leave. That should not be a problem for anyone should it?

The way I see it you either stay here and fight it or you will be fighting it elsewhere but that is just my opinion.

My husband may be among those leaving. Is he a coward? He can't take the heat but his sensitivities are different than mine so I would say that he is not.

26. American citizens who live in other nations can still vote
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 09:40 AM by suffragette
They can even be active and connect with other Americans living abroad and encourage them to exercise that right.
There are many reasons people move and these moves may be temporary or permanent.
Students move to study abroad. People move for family or work reasons or simply because they prefer the way of life (which covers many factors) in one place to another.
They also share new perspectives they've gained with family and friends living here.
Abandonment? I actually think its enrichment. But I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

28. Other. There are positive reasons to move to another country.
Job opportunities. Family ties. Education. Fine reasons--for those who can afford to go. Most countries require lots of money and/or marketable skills.

The drama queens who whine about the USA but just talk about "escaping" do get a bit old. Rather than emote, they need to seriously look into the process. And they ought to have something positive to offer their new--even if temporary--countries.
