Is the government spying on you? Find out!
An email from People For the American Way (http://www.pfaw.org)...

Want to know if the government is spying on you?
Use www.FOIArequest.org to find out!

Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), anyone has the right to request information from the government. Last strengthened by Congress in response to the Watergate scandal, FOIA gives citizens a way to demand transparency from the Bush administration -- and take the government to court if necessary.

The Bush administration is trying to keep the details of its illegal domestic surveillance program under wraps, even refusing to say how many Americans they've eavesdropped on. Many Americans -- especially those with family and friends abroad -- are wondering whether government agents have been listening to their phone conversations or reading their email.

If you're worried this has happened to you, People For the American Way has created a new tool: www.foiarequest.org

You can file a Freedom of Information Act request quickly, accurately, and easily.

We can't guarantee that the Bush administration will disclose all this information in compliance with the law, but we can help you through the process. By filing a FOIA request, you will send a strong signal that American citizens believe in the rule of law and aren't afraid to stand up to the President when he violates the Constitution!

1. EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON DU SHOULD REQUEST THIS.
AND PASS THE WORD!
The more we request, the better knowledge base we have. If there is widespread surveillance, and we can prove it with our numbers, the bloggers, MSM and others will have to report it.

Sorry if i am screaming.

... this thread does the same, and passes the word.

No apology necessary... your screaming is welcome! :hi:

10. PFAW is a good group, IMO.
I've done things through their site and don't think I've received anything from them, nor anybody I'd connect with them.

Yes, it's okay to give them your info & they won't send you unsolicited email. If you join/subscribe, you'll receive emails such as the one that I posted in the OP... no BS.

17. I hate to say it, but the cost disclaimer was enough to turn me away.
I really do not have a spare dime right now to find out if Uncle Sam is spying on me. For the time being I'll have to assume he is.

18. You may ask for a fee waiver....
You may ask the agency to waive or reduce search and copy fees if you think the fees are too high, or if the fees are fair but the total charges make the request prohibitively expensive. The law provides that the agency “shall” waive or reduce fees if you meet the public interest test described below. And you may be entitled to fee benefits if you fall within a certain category of requester.

The FOI Reform Act of 1986 set out specific fee provisions for four categories of requesters: (1) commercial use requesters must pay fees for document search, duplication, and review; (2) non-commercial requesters from educational or scientific institutions pay no search fees and receive 100 pages of free duplication; (3) representatives of the news media pay no search fees and receive copies of 100 pages free; (4) all other requesters receive two hours of search time and copies of 100 pages free.10

24. I'm not so sure this is a good idea, unless you have a serious
concern that you're being spied on. I'm sure this agency has a limited number of staff to process requests. Mucking up the system with frivolous requests will only delay processing of the really important ones.

Just my $0.02.

25. This isn't for "frivolous" requests; it's for people who believe that...
... they may have been spied on. I doubt that people would waste time (and money) by submitting "frivolous" requests.
