Tensions between Republican lawmakers and the White House have reached an all-time high, say Republicans on Capitol Hill.

President Bush's sagging poll numbers, the administration's handling of the Dubai port deal and lingering bad memories of Harriet Miers' failed Supreme Court nomination have left a broad spectrum of Republicans on Capitol Hill with little good will toward the White House.

"I was offended," Sen. Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican, said of Mr. Bush's threat last week to veto legislation aimed at stopping the transfer of port operations to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates. He said Mr. Bush "threatened me before I even knew the details of what was involved or whether I was going to vote for the bill or not."

Mr. Lott said his immediate reaction was: "OK, big boy, I'll just vote to override your veto."

He called the White House, he said, to advise administration officials that they'd run afoul of some of their strongest allies in Congress.

"Don't threaten me like that again," said the former majority leader, recounting the conversation with an official he declined to name. "It doesn't make a difference if you're a Republican or a Democrat. Don't put your fist in my face. Where I'm from, we're willing to fight back."

I'm not trying to put lipstick on a pig... but Lott knows his way around Washington.

I actually like something Trent Lott is doing. However, everytime he opens his mouth he has a habit of saying something racist, so any good feeling won't last long.

Lott will probably always be semi-evil--but it appears that he's not willing to take as much
guff from "big boy" (LOLOLOL!!!!!).

This is really going to get comical and colorful. Bush's poll numbers are officially in the tank. Republicans feel a bit more emboldened now to say what they want. After being bullied around by this arrogant little fleeb--I'm sure there are plenty more hilarious one-liners yet to come!

Whenever I see a picture of the 2 of them together I can't help but think that was their extra curricular activity in high school(B*) and college (for Lott anyway)

ever since the WH orchestrated his departure as republican leader of the senate and put Frist in.

refused to back him following the Strom Thurman debacle.

I think it is more personal than for the good of america...i.e., had junior backed him up back then, Trent wouldn't have blinked about this port thing. But I'll take it, and it does sound good coming from the former senate majority leader.

Trent may lose because of what the pubs haven't done in his state since the storm.
