Okay, you know how parents always brag about their kids? Well, today I am going to brag about my Dad. In his retirement, he spends more time writing letters to the editor than just about anything else, aside from sleeping and golfing. I don't always agree with everything he says, but I love his style. He forwards them to some faithful readers, including myself, and I have always wanted to share one. Today is the day. Feel free to just nod and smile politely ;)

On Monday, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, declared unequivocally that the threat of civil war in Iraq was past and the crisis was over. His premature pronouncement followed one day during which there were no bombings. It took very little time for the Iraqis to prove him wrong as reported in Tuesday’s Daily Sun <“Dozens Killed in Baghdad Bombings”>.

The same tired rhetoric and hyperbole is spewing from the White House after they had already shot their mouths off, once again raising the false hope that perhaps, at long last, the Iraqis were getting their act together and moving toward a stable and unified government. Obviously, this was but another in a long line of such short-lived fantasies on the part of George Bush. What is not fantasy is the fact that another U.S. soldier fell victim to the renewed violence and the number of U.S. casualties is fast approaching 3,000.

Were there a course to stay then, by all means, we should stay the course. Were substantial progress being made then, by all means, we should nurture and grow that progress. Were there any hopeful signs that our efforts in Iraq were bearing fruit, a valid argument could be made to continue those efforts. But there is no course; and there is no progress; and the only fruit is the bitter fruit of ever-growing American casualties.

Mr. Bush must remove our brave young men and women from the line of fire and let the Iraqis fend for themselves.
