So if I'm correct - EC is just a high concentrate of Birth Control Pills
I read on a website that back in 1997, the NYTimes actually published how to make EC out of birth control pill.

Maybe I'm just suggesting that if you're a woman in a red state you might just want to stock up on the BCP. If anything, if you or someone close to you is raped or dealing with incest at least you can take matters into your own hands.

The revolution is about to begin. And the sad thing is, it was the people that would most benefit from having choice that will be most affected by having choice removed from them. I grew up in rural America and I still cannot understand the appeal of the republican party to poor white trash (and when I say trash - I mean anyone who was just too stupid to even bother spending 15 minutes to understand the issues before they voted. Hell I was poor and white, but at least I took the time to learn the difference). They voted for him and now they will pay the price for their stupidity.

If you live in a red-state you might just want to prepare yourself because I concerned that it will get worse before it gets better.

1. yes, you're right.
You don't actually need something labeled "morning -after pill." Plain old oral contraceptives, taken in a larger dose, will also work.

2. Well, I'm just getting the word out there
I mean, once abortion is gone, the next thing will be banning BCP or at least giving pharmacists full rights to not dispense the drug if they feel it's morally wrong. I'm just saying that keeping a few packs of BCP hidden away in an old coat in the back of your closet might not be a bad thing. At least it would be a better option than coat hangers

Thank god! In the red states that are making it official like MS etc. it already was next to impossible to get one anyway. Frontline had an excellent documentary about this within the year.

17. Their theory will be that unmarried women don't need any
contraceptives because they shouldn't be having sex anyway, and if they do, they will have to live with their "punishment". Married women won't need contraceptives because if they get pregnant it is because God wills it and they should just accept it.

4. That's somewhat correct -
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 02:48 PM by sparosnare
EC is a high dosage of levonorgestrel, which is found in BCPs. It either prevents the egg from being released from the ovary or it makes the lining of the uterus 'hostile' to implantation. Anyone who tries to say it's dangerous or has a lot of side effects are not being truthful.

That said, BCPs aren't exactly the same; taking a few at one time will induce menstruation.

5. Whatever it is - we need to get the correct information available
because the other options are horrible. I don't think we're going to be able to save choice in red states but the least we can do is educate liberals in red-states so they have safe options available. And as another poster mentioned, BCP will probably be tackled soon after abortions are banned. So why not start stocking up on the stuff now just incase someone might need it down the line!

Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 02:59 PM by LynneSin
but unfortunately there are those around them that could do unspeakable things. Keeping BCP handy might be helpful if one of those unspeakable things happens to one of your daughters. I pray that it doesn't because it should never happen to anyone; however, red-states aren't feeling that pain with many of these abortion bans.

Good luck to you. Hopefully we can change the world back to the way it was but I'm afraid we're going to have to hit rock-bottom first before we see the light at the end of the tunnel

Your idea is good, but probably only for women who are a little more on the ball as far as their reproductive planning is concerned. The real shame are the more naive girls who find themselves in an emergency who might not know to plan ahead.

and, I use birth control but not pills. What could I do to stock up for emergencies?

12. Well here's the thing
I'm talking about using BCP as Emergency Contraceptives since EC is nothing more than high dosage BCP. There are suppose to be recipes out there how how many to take of each brand of BCP in order to do an EC.

For someone like you who is using BC but not the pill, stocking up on a few months of the pills might help should something horrible happen to you since it seems many of these bans are not protecting those who are raped/incest. The BCP might be able to be used as EC in an emergency and not just for you but perhaps a friend or other loved one.

But for many women in these red states, I don't know what to say. Educated people (ie - those smart enough to not vote for that idiot) will think ahead about other options. But for many they will probably have to suffer because of the stupid voters in their states who had no clue what they were doing when they voted for Bush.

Consider this - women who know what an abortion ban means are already starting to plan ahead. The rest of the dumbasses who didn't think about it and thought Bush was the better option - enjoy! I know they are not my problem.

prescription next week and stocking up as well as I can--I'm going to ask my doctor if I can get more than one month's worth of samples, or if she can write me a prescription that will allow me to buy a year's worth and keep it at home, rather than having to get it refilled, just in case.

Is it possible to order bulk amounts online? Or is this illegal as well? I know you can do it with some other meds...

62. I would still be SOL if I lived in one of these states.
My husband I have two kids and don't want any more, but that's not the main reason I take hormonal birth control (I don't use BCP, something similar, but different form). My hormones are all out of whack without them. I become very anemic and exhausted due to excessive bleeding. I would not be able to take care of the two kids I do have without hormonal therapy. Prevention of conception is just a positive (along decreased risk of certain cancers and clearing up acne) side effect for me.

They don't give a shit about all that- when it comes to anything remotely pertaining to SEX, placating the loony 'left behind' contingent is all that matters.

If they wanted to reduce abortions AND get money to the pharma companies, the LOGICAL thing would be to lobby for birth control to be available OTC. Nope- never happen. The pharma companies could be making money on Plan B OTC right now, but it ran smack dab into the far right fundy agenda.

No, criminalizing birth control is CLEARLY the next step in the agenda.

This really gets to a fundamental conflict in the R party. Wackjob Fundies vs. Extreme Free-marketeers. I wonder if there is a good way to exploit that... try to foment a real schism?

I have a feeling that the Free-market types would not give up so easily and they, for the most part I think, do not share the extreme religious beliefs that their R brethren do on the Fundie side. They worship profits at all other costs.

11. Yes
from what I've read that is correct. It apparently works by either suppressing ovulation entirely or preventing the implantation of a fertilized ovum in a woman's uterine lining. It is for the latter action that the fundo-wackos want to outlaw it. They look upon the prevention of implantation as the same thing as actually actively aborting a pregnancy. Many of the anti-choice groups not only want to outlaw abortion but also most forms of birth control, their mantra being that most types of birth control "abort" a pregnancy because they prevent fertilized ovas' implantations in uterine linings. They refuse to accept any research that shows in many cases EC actually suppresses ovulation, preventing fertilization. These are some seriously stupid and nasty folks.

Some Planned Parenthood health centers offer "just-in-case" emergency contraception kits to keep at home, also called EC-to-Go. Planned Parenthood offers all safe, available emergency contraceptive choices, but not every method is available at every Planned Parenthood health center.

To contact the nearest Planned Parenthood for emergency contraception, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

71. Note that the dose listed needs to be taken TWICE, 12 hours apart:
"This regimen uses two doses of oral contraceptive pills that combine estrogen and certain progestin hormones (FDA, 1997). It can reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken within 120 hours (five days) of unprotected intercourse. The treatment is more effective the sooner it begins (Ellertson, et al., 2003; "FDA Approves...", 1999; Rodrigues, et al., 2001; Stewart, et al., 2004). (Because the emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) have a five-day window of effectiveness, the popular term "morning-after pill" is misleading.) The doses are taken 12 hours apart. Various prescription products contain the appropriate hormone combination and can be used as ECPs:
Alesse® Wyeth-Ayerst 5 pink pills
Aviane® Barr 5 orange pills
<etc, from above post>"

Back in the days before Plan B, this is what we prescribed in the ER.

Note that, since nausea and vomiting are common side effects, the use of an anti-emetic drug can be helpful:
"Combination hormone ECPs induce nausea in 30-50 percent of women, and vomiting in 15-25 percent of women. Anti-nausea or anti-emetic medications taken one hour before ingesting ECPs may reduce these side effects."

There is a planned parenthood link here in this thread that had the recipe list and instructions. Someone noticed mention of having anti-nausea pills handy just in case someone tends to get quesy pretty easily

34. A problem w/using concentrated doses of regular BCP vs Plan B
is the nausea factor. If women simply "up the dose" of their regular BCPs to act as emergency contraception, it is a very real possibility it will make them nauseous enough to vomit them back up - which will make this option useless.

Plan B is formulated in such a way as to make the dosage tolerable, without the nausea & possible vomiting.

If a woman cannot get her hands on Plan B, and the high doses of regular BCP makes her vomit, what can she do then?

I'm familiar w/ways of getting Plan B from alternative routes, but I would really like some practical info out there for the woman / girl who may have access to regular BCPs in an emergency, but not Plan B...what about vaginal insertion? I have heard this alternative tossed about...

40. thanks...I'm going to look around for that info on vaginal insertion too..
just in case the anti-nausea med doesn't work.

I have a sister who seems to vomit up everything, including anti-nausea stuff, so I figure there must be others out there.

Time to get pro-active

Thanks for sharing this info. I will pass it along to all of the college students I know....though many are from wealthy families who have no problem obtaining abortions.

I have been a financial supporter of Planned Parenthood in the past and urge everyone to support them now more than ever.

39. Yes
It can be accomplished through multiple doses of certain OC. In fact, in many cases, its cheaper to do that than buy the packaged product, but only under direction of a medical professional, please. In our clinic, we were doing this before the marketing of the brand name products.

The warning is well taken, since there appears to be momentum for "Pharmacist Moral Protection" laws that will allow pharmacists to NOT fill RX if they have 'objection' to such things as selling OC to women not in a 'traditional married relationship.' The pendulum is swinging to a very dark region.

41. That's why I'm saying that the time to plan is now
If you can get a prescription even if you do not need it - go get one now. Stash it some place safe and if the time should come that you do need it you'll be prepared. Believe me, when a woman thinks she's pregnant, especially an unplanned one, the brain tends to get overemotional and the logical thinking goes all to shit.

All women need to remember their girl scout motto of "Be Prepared" if we're to survive this!

42. I take BC to control my periods
I have hormonal problems, though it hasn't been verified because Medicare and Medicaid won't cover for me to see an endocrinologist. I do know that I went a week without my BC and my period was horrible when it came around.

I live in a blue state (Michigan) but on the west side where there is nothing but fundies so I am frightened as well. I am 26 and have no kids and I really don't plan on having any.

My pagan group were discussing the SD decision and one of my friends mentioned that there was an herb that you can take to induce menstruation. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Perhaps we could get seeds of this herb and grow it .

43. I hate to say it but you start getting into herbs
and other unverified methods then we're getting back to coat-hangers. At least in Michigan you could drive a few miles to the non-fundie side and find help. However, if you lived in South Dakota or Mississippi, not only are you screwed in your own state, but driving you a few hours will put you in a state where you will still be screwed again.

It's a proven fact that high doses of BCP can be used as EC. I would think the best advice is for us women who aren't using to start stockpiling so we can help out those who need it. And I'm sure you're the type of person that you'd even sacrifice your own BCP to help a friend or relative out in need.

80. Some herbs will "induce menstruation"--not the morning after.
But even an expert couldn't be sure how much to take--herbs naturally vary in strength. And an effective dose could be perilously close to toxic for the mother. A less-than-effective dose might bring about a partial abortion--for which medical intervention is needed.

Drink mint tea for indigestion & chamomile for nerves. But, in some situations, modern medicine is the way to go.

51. My brother's ex-g/f
had a pregnancy scare (protection broke) and took 3 BCPs the next day b/c she didn't want people at the pharmacy to know or decide her fate.

But don't forget the reich-wingers also have said Pharmacist's can decide whether to give BCPs based on THEIR OWN MORALS this is NOT just limited to morning after pills. Our country is in the grips of fundamentalist madmen.

59. That's why we need to start doing something right now
I'm in a blue state and if I needed EC I would have no problem getting it except from the hospital closest to me (it's a catholic hospital).

But laws will change including pharmacists who will start using their morals in handing out drugs (do these assholes confirm that viagra users are all married?). So my mentality is simple. I'll get a new prescription to one of the BCP that can be used as EC and start stockpiling it. Then if I need it or even a friend who needs it, I'll have something available to use there on the spot with no hassle.

I can't do anything now with these red states overturning abortion laws. It's gonna happen and nothing we can do to stop it. And if John Paul Stevens retires before Bush is out of office, RoeVWade will be dead in the water (Technically it's at 5-4, but Kennedy can sway back and forth depending on what's in the law. He'd support RoeVWade but he also supported CaseyVSEPa). Personally, for dumbass folks in red states (or as I refer to them - poor white trash), I don't care what happens to them. They're fricking so stupid to vote for these assholes even those these assholes are using them to get filthy rich and make them even poorer. Let them get knocked up and figure out how to feed all their kids. But I know there are good, intelligent, progressive thinkers in these red states who will suffer because of the poor, white, trash. I'm just doing what I can to possibly help these people down the line

52. That's what they gave me when I went to Planned Parenthood 10 years ago
I did get sick from it hours later. It seems that going to track practice a couple hours later to do a 10 mile run in cold rain wasn't the best idea. I got very sick about half way through the run and a team mate called from a gas station to take me back to campus. The coach was not happy about me skipping out on the run. I told him that I had gotten ill, but was too embarassed at the time to explain that I had taken emergency contraception. I ended up having to do extra workouts all week.
I wish that I had just left a message that I was sick on the coach's voice mail that day. I would advice anyone who uses a larger dose of birth control pills for emergency contraception to just take it easy and rest. It may be safe, but it doesn't mean that you won't have side effects.

60. You can thank poor white trash for making us do this
White trash that felt that somehow the republicans were going to save them because of nonsense talk that they were the party of God.

They will be the ones to suffer the most because they will not have the contacts they need to get out of trouble if trouble finds them. But as these red states are destroyed we need to find a way to help those who tried to fight to make the state a better place but were overwhelmed by the voices of the poor white trash. Maybe this is a start

it's not very red (FL), but it's been right on the cusp for the last several years.
We need more ex-northerners like me to move here I guess. :) Although I didn't really learn my moral code up there, I moved down here too young. And my parents never impressed theirs on me, they let me learn for myself.

74. I remember getting into a debate with a local freeper-type before
the election. I'm in Kentucky. We were debating several issues and the issue of abortion came up when I pointed out the likelihood of Bush appointing SCOTUS judges. She amazingly backed away from that angle, and simply said, "while I can't say I'm supportive of abortion, I really don't want to see it made illegal. But I don't believe that will happen, ever."

Honestly, I think this was a commonly held belief by many, many Bush voters. They don't feel it should be illegal because they acknowledge the reality of the situation. They also felt that we were being alarmists, that it would never happen. I wonder if they're happy now. WE TRIED TO TELL THEM.

PP is a great organization. It was founded by a very courageous woman -- Margaret Sanger, who went to prison for helping women get contraceptives when that was against the law.
