James Dobson gets a thank you letter....from Supreme Court Justice Alito

http://thinkprogress.org

James Dobson gets letters. “This is just a short note to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the entire staff of Focus on the Family for your help and support during the past few challenging months. I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me that they were praying for me and for my family during this period.” — Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito

2. Exactly why Alito shouldnt have been nominated.
Really - why does he have ties with this piece of shit group? That alone should have been grounds for disqualification.

5. Can you imagine if a "liberal" justice
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 03:44 PM by Charlie Brown
had written a thank-you letter to Moveon.org or Planned Parenthood.

They'd probably be impeached.

On edit: Alito went on to write, “As long as I serve on the Supreme Court I will keep in mind the trust that has been placed in me” WTF? He just stated that he would not be an impartial judge. This is probably grounds for impeachment.

8. Exactly. This shows a real lack of judgment.
A controversial justice like Alito ought to be doing everything he can to legitimize the court. Instead he buddies up to religious extremists. Way to go.

19. What were they supposed to do? Dems are in the minority
I'm not real thrilled with the situation, but Bush did win the election and he gets to appoint the judges, at least for now. It's far more important to win back some congressional seats this year, and the presidency in 2008. Then the dems might be able to do something about the courts.

20. They had the chance to filibuster and even shutdown the entire Senate.
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 04:42 PM by Roland99
They blew it.

Big time.

How in the hell is a Dem president in '09 going to change the face of the SCOTUS?

21. and they would have lost the filibuster, and Alito still been confirmed
Some people at this board believe the filibuster can stop anything and puts the Democrats on an equal footing with the Republicans. They are mistaken.

Almost all the Republican members of the gang of 14 had indicated they would support the nuclear option if the filibuster was effectively used against Alito.

At most, the filibuster would have been a statement against Alito, that's it.

If you must blame someone for Alito's confirmation, blame Byrd, Conrad, Johnson, and Ben Nelson for supporting the ass.

23. Robert Byrd talked to the guy and the guy said he'd be a good...
KKKonservative! That was enough for Mr Byrd. He "Believes" in Alito, and trusts him with the country's life, liberty and freedom.

14. It was a mistake for the coward wing of the party to nix the filibuster.
I guess when Bush gets down to say, 2% the "leadership" will start opposing Bush's radical appointees.

24. Now this is creepy...but I'm not surprised
I knew that Alito was in the pocket of the Fundies the moment * announced his nomination. I mean, we are talking about a Republican appointed Justices. The Repugs have been giving fundies these types of prizes since the 1980's at the least, Reagan struck gold with the fundies when he gave them Scalia, * Sr.'s prize to fundies was Thomas, and * Jr. with Roberts & Alito so far. I know this sounds harsh, but I really don't trust any republican appointed justice until they prove themselves to be otherwise, and even then I feel I have to keep an eye on them. And this "thank you letter" just proves that he never was a moderate as the reupugs were saying he was, just another right wing kook.
