SF Supervisors Vote To Impeach Bush

SAN FRANCISCO -- While it carries only symbolic weight, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has taken another vote to draw the ire of conservatives across the nation. They have taken a vote to impeach President George Bush. The board's vote was not the first in California. Santa Cruz has already passed such a measure while Watsonville's leaders approved a resolution last month that calls for the president to bring California National Guard troops home from Iraq.

Still it's San Francisco that has drawn criticism from national conservatives including Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly. Spurred on by O'Reilly's comments, Highland -- a small town of 50,000 people in San Bernardino County -- passed a resolution not to send any officials to San Francisco for state meetings. "The City of Highland will not spend public money going to the City of San Francisco," said Highland city councilmember Jody Scott. "We will not spend one dime of public money."

The San Francisco Supervisors took the action by a 7-3 vote, they claim, because Bush has destroyed civil liberties in his wiretapping program, and failed miserably in his response to Hurricane Katrina. "I think the case is clear, and I think it's appropriate for us to weigh in," Supervisor Chris Daly told the San Francisco Chronicle. But only Congress can impeach the president, and no one there is attempting it.

Mayor Gavin Newsom, not one to shy away from controversy, said signing the resolution was not high on his priority list. "It's probably going to shatter the status quo in this country when it passes,'' a joking Newsom told the Chronicle. "I imagine, immediately, Congress will probably convene into session and begin impeachment proceedings."

But one thing was for certain -- San Francisco would once again be fodder for conservative talk show hosts.

Yep, they will be and should be. This is one reason I'm opposed to this kind of street theater. It makes the practitioners look foolish.

SF has absolutely no say in whether or not anybody should be impeached at the federal level. And while I am all for them expressing their opinions on this or any other subject as individuals, and while I agree with their position, they have no business as a governmental unit entering into this issue. To do so just shows them to be ineffective leaders who are not concentrating on their legitimate responsibilities. IMO.

5. I so disagree.
This notion of communties making their voices heard (as a community of citizens) in order to save our democracy andd sugggesting as merely Street Theatre, or that their business is not related to what is going on in the nation's capital, is really naive and akin to the Good German syndrome in my view.

9. I agree with you
it's just another way that the RW will turn SF into the butt of their jokes. It's also meaningless since it has no effect on policy or even turning public opinion.

10. I don't see why it's so
hard for so many people to understand.

Never give away your plans.

Never boast of accomplishments you can't achieve.

Never cry (in public, anyway) when you lose.

Never blame your enemies for your own failures.

Never give up.

Clark's the kind of man we need to run in 2008.

4. Oh dear, the RW radio propagandists will be upset!
Quick, shut up the representatives of the people of San Francisco lest Rush say unpleasant things about liberals.

7. Yes, they are.
Last night Tucker-HO-Carlson belittled it stating that only 15% in SF voted for Bush. He insinuated that SF never liked Bush anyway, so no big deal.
Here in So. CA where I'm surrounded by Bushbots I've had an "Impeach Bush/Cheney" sticker on my car for months. I hope to see more.
