To the families of the lost miners...

I am so sorry for your loss. It's also sad that that loss had to be compounded by hours of false hope by irresponsible journalists and ignorant management. I'm sorry that thier deaths turned into a fiasco for you and I hope the company honors its responsibility. If they don't, drop us a line here at the DU. I promise to raise as much hell as I can to help you out. God bless you and keep you.

2. Not the media

It wasn't the media who was raising false hopes. It was the families themselves who told the media that the miners were safe. The people from the mining company also said the miners were safe. Then, of course, there were the bells ringing to signify a happy ending which alas, turned out not to be so.

Could and should they have been more cautious? Of course. But the notion that reporters were the ones who informed family members that the miners had survived is untrue.
