I am watching for Brian Williams coverage of this Katrina bombshell
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 06:29 PM by Stephanie

He was there and he's continued to cover it frequently. I'd think this would hit him hard. Starts here in two minutes.

9. Bombshell. BIG one.
WASHINGTON - In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, risk lives in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage of the briefings.

Bush didn't ask a single question during the final government-wide briefing the day before Katrina struck on Aug. 29 but assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: "We are fully prepared."

Six days of footage and transcripts obtained by The Associated Press show in excruciating detail that while federal officials anticipated the tragedy that unfolded in New Orleans and elsewhere along the Gulf Coast, they were fatally slow to realize they had not mustered enough resources to deal with the unprecedented disaster.

Linked by secure video, Bush's bravado on Aug. 29 starkly contrasts with the dire warnings his disaster chief and a cacophony of federal, state and local officials provided during the four days before the storm.

13. This is not a bombshell
Anybody who believes Bush didn't know a hurricane was headed to New Orleans and that the city would likely flood is literally living with a bag over their head. People know Bush fucked up Katrina completely, this is just a verification that he is as big an idiot they already think he is. Not a bombshell and certainly not worth diverting our attention away from the botched recovery or the ports or the war.

33. People know that
I think they've come to terms with it. I think you'd have to have a tape with Bush boy point blank refusing to provide help for it to sink in to the heads of the true believers. If the film of him playing guitar and eating cake didn't do it, I'm not sure this one will. That's all I'm saying.

26. I think there are a lot of people who believed just that
What's good about this video is that, as Randi Rhodes says, it's not real if it's not on the teevee. Well, now this tape is being shown on the teevee, and people who here-to-fore may NOT have believed Bush didn't know anything, or was doing all he could are going to change their minds.

I don't know if you recall, but after the hurricane hit and things went to hell in a handbasket as far as rescuse and recovery goes, lots of repukes were pointing fingers at the local and state governments of Louisiana and Mississippi. Not saying that those officials didn't have responsibility; they did. But this was a national disaster, so therefore the Federal government -- including the president, had a responsibility too.

I do agree that we cannot ignore the botched recovery or anything else. I'm just saying that there ARE plenty of people who did not know, or did not want to believe, that Bush was irresponsible on this issue (as he is on every other issue).

Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 06:57 PM by Dr Fate
By my count, coverage on ANYTHING concerning Katrina has been lagging. If it were not for mardi Gras and now this, it would not be on the news at all.

This story serves the dual purpose of keeping Kartina up front in our memories as well as supplying Democrats with on-camera proof that Bush is a "liar."

I hope your post is not an indication that "play it safe" Democrats will let this one drop.

43. My post isn't an indication of anything
Except my own opinion. I just think the ports and security, the war, and Katrina rebuilding are the most important issues. Taking those on, boldly, would landslide us this fall. More Bush bashing, he's a liar, eh, yeah, what else is new. Anybody inclined to vote Democrat in any way, already knows that. But we'll see.

50. "Taking those on, boldly, would landslide us this fall" Agreed.
I agree with ya- but I disagree with people who say that calling Bush a liar hurts Democrats. The Repubs use negative campaigning to great effect all the time.

Americans dont like to admit it, but they almost always respond to negative campaigning in favor of the the one making the accusations. (See "Gore invented the internet", Swiftboat Vets, Max Cleland = Osma, "The Wellstone funeral was a disgrace", etc, etc)

It works. The big difference is we can do it without lying.

52. Now see, a campaign issue
Oh sure, definitely a campaign issue. Especially if we can spill it over to the rest of the party.

But right NOW, on the teevee, I wouldn't want to trade the ports, the war, and the lack of rebuilding for that video clip. I don't think the video clip trumps the rest of it, right now.

On the negative campaigning, did you know that exit polls said John Kerry campaigned unfairly more often than Bush did?

Do you understand that when people say Bush lied about the WMD, that people see that as unfair negative campaigning. You and I see it as just the truth, a whole host of people just see it as unfair attacks. There are lots of things that you hear as just the "duh" truth, but a whole bunch of other people see as attacks.

It's like Jon Stewart said on Larry King, the two parties can't even agree on what reality is. Do we have climate change, or don't we. Is Peak Oil real, or not. What costs more, corporate welfare, or people welfare. Point being, just because you aren't hearing the attacks, it doesn't mean that THEY aren't hearing the attacks. Even seeing this clip on teevee will look like an unfair attack to them.

Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 08:39 PM by Dr Fate
The polls may say that people thought Kerry was negative, but they VOTED for the man who really was negative. They always do.

I dont recall Kerry ever saying that "Bush lied about WMDs"- he should have said it everytime they called him a flip-flopper.

You make worthwhile points to mull over though- thanks.

46. We'll see
I just don't see this as being any revelation, that's all. Bush knew New Orleans was in danger and tried to cover his ass. Duh. That's what Bush does. The people who know he's a liar, already know it. The ones who excuse everything he does, will continue to. That's just how I see it, but after this thread, I will certainly get out of the way and let things fall where they may, and certainly hope it's right on top of his head. Far be it from me to stand in the way of a perfectly good ass-whoopin.

I agree with you to a degree. We , the informed at DU and other blogs were VERY AWARE of what was.......more so, what WASN'T being done in re to Katrina. But one thing you're really right on is that, a "HUGH" percentage of the public who even bother to vote, all have bags over their heads. On CNN tonight they reported that more Americans know more about what's going on with American Idol, and "The Simpson's" than they know what rights they have under the Constitution!! Therefore I believe it is good that this gets into the mainstream media to open their eyes, then maybe they can understand what we have to lose with the port deal and all the other crap going on. I can't believe that some bushbots really still think that we are just "playing gottcha" with the "chimperor" !!! :loveya: DC P.S. Most of the people I know who are not at all political really could care less! Their favorite quote is "what's the difference, they're all crooks anyway"!!!:nuke: edited for sp.

So, why did the Bush administration say that nobody predicted that the levies would break?

Jim, the warning was that the levies could break under a Category FIVE hurricane. When Katrina landed it was a Category Three. When the White House said nobody could anticipate the levies breaking, they meant that nobody could anticipate the levies breaking under a Category Three hurricane.

So (if my memory is correct) this is pure, unadulterated bullshit. They believed as Katrina approached that it would be a Cat 4 or Cat 5. Was the levee break prediction only for Cat 5, BTW, or did it include Cat 4?

35. We sat in a hotel room in Portland, OR that weekend
watching the Weather Channel with a friend that lives in Tennessee. We were desperately afraid she wouldn't be able to get home safely before Katrina hit. It was obvious to anyone watching the Weather Channel's excellent coverage (and possessing an IQ above room temperature,) that New Orleans, let alone the entire Gulf Coast, was in serious trouble.

Tell me: What is the tipping point? What will it finally take to see that squatter in the Oval Office impeached?

Julie

p.s. Our friend Beth was fine. She made it home safely. Our friend Karen's family, (from just outside of Gulfport,) on the other hand, lost everything but the clothes on their backs.
