On Sunday, as headlines report "Katrina Packing Wind of Nearly 175 Mph" and New Orleans is ordered to evacuate, Bush finally resurfaces in a taped appearance. He makes brief remarks about Katrina and then discusses Iraq. As the hurricane rages, Bush flies to Arizona for a "Conversation on Medicare." Upon landing, he presents John McCain with a birthday cake. He then flies to San Diego to spend the night at the luxury resort Hotel del Coronado, reportedly attending a fundraiser that night.

As floodwaters inundate New Orleans and the Gulf Coast reels from the catastrophe, Bush speaks at a VJ-Day ceremony in San Diego. Afterwards singer Mark Wills presents him with a guitar. He then returns to Crawford for the night.

Bush finally returns to Washington. AF1 flies over New Orleans so Bush can view the disaster. Back at the WH he makes his first official statement about the aftermath of Katrina.

I hadn't seen this one, only the one with his profile staring out the window. Look at the expression on his face! If that isn't guilt.....

I remember when this picture was on DU before. We talked about the "phomne not being connected" (although it actually is through a hole in the table). It was a big issue when it was first published.

Why didn't it occur to any of us that the news crews would have footage?

that photo was released by the white house. this new footage was leaked by somebody -

but I do remember the conversation here on DU about the pic.

it wasn't an AP or Reuters photographer, it was a WH photographer, i.e. an in-house photo released to the press. I remember it was labeled something like WH Handout. But yes it was posted at Yahoo News.

at this (and other similar pages) is the same one I had when the Berlin Wall fell and other communist-dictator-states were toppled. I couldn't really believe, digest what I was seeing. It seemed incredible, and yet the pictures showed it was real. These are stunning pictures, of great historical significance. We need to make sure they are seen by everyone.

eta: What about a pic of him before the sweaty back, of him in front of that awful Gonewiththewind era house. Looked like a haunted house set from Hollywood.
