11. I was a Learjet and JetStar II pilot for the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline.
Ken Lay was the President of Transco. Jack Bowen was the CEO. I flew Ken Lay all over the US and Europe. Ken Lay left Transco for Houston Natural Gas in about 1983 (or so), bought Omaha-based Inter-North, and birthed Enron.
I met G.W. Bu$h through Ken Lay and Jack Bowen in the early 1980s. Bu$h rode my Lockheed JetStar II jump-seat from DCA to IAH in about 1982/1983. He was the guest of Ken Lay on the passenger manifest. He was in the jump-seat for take-off and landing. Otherwise, he was tending bar at the aft galley and drinking heavily.
This is not new stuff, but it is true stuff. I've posted it almost yearly for five years on DU.

18. I last flew Ken in about 1982.
That was to Europe in the JetStar-II. His new wife (then new), Linda, and I got along famously. She is the one who cried on "Good Morning America" over losing a mountain house or two in Aspen. She was a great, great lady in the early days .. before Kenny-Boy spoiled her. Now she is a whinny bitch.

10. I used to go to his crawfish boils
when they would come to our city to put on their extravagant party in the '80's. I used to go with a friend of mine who worked in oil and gas. We looked forward to it every year 'cause it was so much fun. That's when the beer flowed freely and the party never ended. Little did I know a scandal was brewing years later.

12. Let me guess ..
You lived or worked on the pipeline. Probably near or on a compressor station. I'd fly the party team to the nearest airport (ie, Demopolis, Alabama) in the Learjet 25 or Learjet 55. The big JetStar-II was reserved for the bigwigs like Kenny-boy!

just had a friend who worked (the vice-president's secretary) for a petroleum company in my hometown and every year Enron would throw this huge and I mean HUGE spring crawfish boil. The Enron employees served us at our tables and we devoured crawfish, corn and potatoes. The bar was free and flowing:D They had a keg and several frozen drink machines set too. It was a feast! They hired a band and invited all the local oil and gas employees for their hoop-la. You had to have an invitation to get in and my friend took me as her "date." (One of the employees told me they did this in the "big" cities for their clients:shrug:)

When the Enron scandal came out, I called her and asked her what the hell was going on and then we reminisced about the crawfish boils.

On a side note, one night we were out having drinks and she told me that there were some things going on in her own oil and gas company that scared the shit out of her. I asked her what the hell she was talking about and she specifically said, "let's just say ***** (her boss's name) is involved in some shady shit." I begged and begged her to tell me more, but she changed the subject and said "I better not say anymore." I will never forget the fear in her eyes.

That was quite a few years ago.

23. They all are. "Slick" goes with "crooked" ... as I've found.
It's scary how they can turn on the charisma. Not all CEO's are crooked (I hope) but they're damned near all able to turn on the charm. (They can be nastier than a cornered rat, too.)

I remember meeting my first CEO - Ed Cole, President of General Moters - in 1967. I had a one-on-one meeting with him while I was a lowly entry-level employee at Chevrolet, pretty fresh out of college and before Nam. I was nervous as hell going in, hoping he wouldn't regard my request (100th fraternity anniversary) as a waste of his time.

I was only 24 years old. He put me at ease in less than 5 minutes. I actually relaxed! Then he noted that the Vice Chairman of the Board of GM might also be interested ... and got up to go across the hall to his office and 'fetch' him. I damned near peed my pants. I had no idea that they both knew that they were fraternity brothers or that it was significant. The whole notion of the President of GM going to pull the Vice Chairman of the Board into a meeting I requested staggered me. The meeting went well and I left at ease again.

Then ...

As I was riding down the elevator and on my way back to my office, I thought about how easily they were able to get me to relax.

That stunned me more than anything else. They were so totally attuned that in mere minutes they had me relaxed. I still don't know how they did it.

(GM was a pretty big company in those days - largest in the world.)

21. LOL! I've threatened to write a book for years but I've gotten too damn
lazy.
:D

The Lockheed 18 you're a bit familiar with from my comments had its share
of assholes riding along way back in the early 70s after my former boss bought it from of all people, LBJ. I never could figure out why he wanted it, being a bigtime rightwing nutjob but apparently the perceived prestige trumped the politics. HAHAHAHA
