"All legislation should be posted online for 72 hours before the vote..."
"...so the staff and bloggers can nitpick and expose".

Great idea!

It actually came from noted conservative David Brooks at the NYT. He finally got something right -- I guess the Abramoff scandal is waking him up.

Tip: If you want to read to the entire article without paying NYT Select or looking at their ads, just search for a key quote on Google Groups groups.google.com -- there's always plenty of people who post the whole article on some group somewhere.

1. I think it came from Obey and Frank
From their 14 bill reform proposal from two days ago. Seems the repugs are already on to Newt's "make their ideas appear to be ours" suggestion.

3. I really LOVE that idea!
The only problem I see is that it supports the elected officials NOT doing their job! I like the idea of having so many eyes reviewing legislation, but it also makes me feel like I'm saying "That's OK if you don't read the bills, we'll do it for you!"

5. Yeah, but if we leave it up to our representitives then we can't
complain. I like this idea because it allows the people to know what's going on so we can hold our representitives accountable

4. That would be nice
Didn't I read here last week about a new procedural change in congress to eliminate the 24 hour restriction between the time a bill is proposed and the time they vote on it? Basically the reverse of what the OP suggests... forcing reps to vote on several hundred pages of fine print without knowing anything at all about it. Maybe I remembering wrong. I realize all the time in the world can't force the congresspeople to read, but it would be very very nice if there was enough time for others to read and report.

7. Hrm, Is David Brooks pinching his ideas from SSB?
It's not a new or unique idea -- even with SSB's horrible search engine we can see it's been proposed several times by ordinary Americans:
