Priests Purify Shrine After Bush Visit
Priests Purify Shrine After Bush Visit

A U.S. security personnel inspects near the eternal flame ...
NEW DELHI - Hindu priests who look after the memorial of Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi conducted a purification ceremony at the shrine after a visit from President Bush. But it wasn't the president who offended them, it was the sniffer-dogs who scoured the area ahead of his visit.

After the dog visit, the memorial was cleansed with water brought from the Ganges river, which Hindus consider holy, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Sunday.

Bush visited the memorial on Thursday during his three day visit to India. The site, where pacifist icon Gandhi was cremated, is considered sacred and all visitors, including Bush and his wife Laura, removed their shoes before going in.

The dogs, flown in from the U.S., were part of the intense security surrounding the president, but the Hindu priests believe they tainted the site.

Letting dogs into the memorial also drew sharp protest from Hindu politicians and Gandhi's great grandson, Tushar Gandhi, who called the incident a "national shame," the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

3. Another example of American insensitivity to other cultures
But don't worry-Rush will explain to his listeners that these "heathen" have "stupid ideas" or something like that, because according to the neocons, American ways are the only right ways.

Frankly, I would think that the dogs are paying off their karmic debt in this life, while the Chimperator is piling on the karma. The priests may SAY they were purifiying the shrine because of the dogs, but the real reason may be something else.

10. I think it's amazing that Bush's
people were able to pull this off. I'm referring to the security people just barging in there, and bringing in their dogs. Why didn't anybody object? Or did they just show up without asking permission? Dogs are expressly forbidden at holy places in India.

I just see Bush as the modern-day Ghengis Khan, intruding, breaking things & traditions, very symbolic of the man himself. A reckless, faithless heathen who has no understanding of other cultures around the world.

cultural thing such as this?

We are the barbarian invaders on the 21st century, after all, with a propensity and need to lie when staging events. From pulling life supports from premature babies, making heroines of young female casualties, and possibly, even setting bombs.

11. It is just too much! Our "leaders" won't acknowledge the
existence of ANYTHING other than their own way of life. Yesterday, I was with a renown Iranian scholar who said to me: There are 2000 Muslim scholars here in the US. 700 of them are high level professors. We volunteered to help the US government understand the facts on the ground in Iraq. Were any of us asked? No. They simply did not want to know.

(yes, this is a pressure washer)

Has there ever been a US president so security-paranoid?

No. Scratch that. Has there ever been a national leader, anywhere in the world, who's so certain that someone's out to kill him? Saddam wasn't this bad. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that our first emperor sleeps in a different city every night.
