Does anyone know the actual number of precincts in the US?

I've been googling,and using other search engines I can't find a definitive answer

If you don't know whole country do you know the number particular to your state?

Town, even? (Mine has 6)

We really need a good oldfashioned precinct captain system for the next election to be incorporated into Dean's 50 state strategy

But it would be nice to see where we have to start from

Out a country with nearly 300 million people that number doesn't seem that large

What is striking is that even in my relatively small community with only 6 precincts we have an abundance of activists in my precinct (#5) and we are challenged to find activists in #'s 3,4,and 6 and this is in one town
