The Day After - Now playing on Sci Fi
Does anybody know, has this been on TV since 2002/2003 when we were getting Fear Fear about Saddam and his nukes?

Is Fear Fear the Nukes now playing to presage an attack on Iran because of its nukes?

1. meh
Overrated and not very accurate.

If you want a truly terrifying post-nuke what-if, see the BBC production of THREADS. Hard to come by, but it makes THE DAY AFTER look like THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

2. I remember thinking it was really stupid
when it came out. It is not even close to accurate but I am watching it and I don't think tonight I will be without a few nightmares. It seems much scarier than it was when I saw it before.

Oh well, it will be a welcome break from my *fundies in the yard* nightmare that keeps showing every night in my dreams.

3. I can't wait 'till we're "left behind."
 After Katrina, I've needed a lot of new (or used) stuff. :D

7. Honey
you have already been left behind. I would rather be left behind with you all than anyone else in the world. Share a blanket?

4. it's mainly good for the cast
Robards is excellent, as is JoBeth Williams. Heck, even Steve Guttenberg and John Lithgow turn in tolerable performances.

"Fundies in the yard"? Sounds like THE OMEGA MAN :)

6. Yes, it has been a trip.
I think the dreams have been inspired by a combo of The X Files and the crap that is going on politically.

It is an excellent cast. Love the Northern Exposure guy. John Cullum?

8. Another good one that is similar: Testament
I think it was one of the first movies Kevin Costner was in. It's not as good as Day After, but it's still worth a watch or two.

12. I think Testament is better than Day After
some lines from Testiment became regular "conversation" around my house for years. It was a way to remember and keep that touchstone feeling close all the time.

Testament is an inspiring movie!

9. They Should Play "Threads" Instead
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 10:43 PM by tlsmith1963
Another (British) nuclear war film that came out at about the same time. It scared the *hell* out of me. Once I saw that, "The Day After" seemed incredibly silly.

Tammy

PS--I see that someone else mentioned it. I think it aired on TNT or TBS when it aired here.

11. exactly
As just one example:

They just showed the hospital operating room scene. It's mightly orderly and sedate. Basically, life goes on, only with flashlights and boiled water.

Compare that to THREADS, in which the hospitals are overflowing, chaotic, and doctors are amputating limbs without anesthesia.

That one scene of a patient biting down on a towel while a doctor takes off his leg with a bone saw will stick with me forever..

14. is this the one that was a TV movie?? and everyone was warned to
watch it with friends?? and there was a discussion after the movie with Kissinger and others to let us know it 'really wasn't/wouldn't be that bad'?????

If so, I remember the hoopla and seeing it with my AAUW friends.

Supposedly the whole country took time out to be scared and then 'reassured'.

15. Yup. Same show. Ran as a 3-day event,
Part 1, one day, part 2, the next, and 1 & 2 together the following Sunday. This was when Reagan was saying that we'd be safe by digging a hole in the back yard and putting a sheet of plywood over it -- The plastic and duct tape of its day.
