Bush: Dubai ports storm hurts war on terror
President concerned about ‘message’ it sends to moderate Arab nations

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday he was troubled by the political storm that forced the reversal of a deal allowing a company in the United Arab Emirates to take over take over operations of six American ports, saying it sent a bad message to U.S. allies in the Middle East.

Bush said the United States needs moderate allies in the Arab world, like the United Arab Emirates, to win the global war on terrorism.

The president said he had been satisfied that security would be sound at the ports if the Dubai deal had taken effect. “Nevertheless, Congress was still very much opposed to it,” Bush said. He made his remarks to a conference of the National Newspaper Association, which represents owners, publishers and editors of community newspapers...

Cheney Cited UAE-Saddam Relations As A Reason US Might Need To Invade Iraq In 2000

TRANSCRIPT FROM THE VP DEBATE W/ SENATOR LIEBERMAN, 10/6/00

MR. SHAW: This question is for you, Mr. Secretary. If Iraq's President Saddam Hussein were found to be developing weapons of mass destruction, Governor Bush has said he would "take him out." Would you agree with such a deadly policy?

MR. CHENEY: We might have no other choice. We'll have to see if that happens. The thing about Iraq, of course, was at the end of the war we had pretty well decimated their military. We had put them back in a box, so to speak. We had a strong international coalition raid against them, effective economic sanctions and a very robust inspection regime that was in place. So that the inspection regime under U.N. auspices was able to do a good job of stripping out the capacity to build weapons of mass destruction -- the work that he'd been doing that had not been destroyed during the war on biological, chemical agents as well as a nuclear program. Unfortunately, now we find ourselves in a situation where that's started to fray on us, where the coalition now no longer is tied tightly together.

Recently the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, two Gulf states, have reopened diplomatic relations with Baghdad. The Russians and the French now are flying commercial airliners back into Baghdad and sort of thumbing their nose, if you will, at the international sanctions regime. And of course the U.N. inspectors have been kicked out. And there's been absolutely no response.

I should have known. Reagan made the process for allowing foreign investment in US interests to be secretive and he made sure Congress could never be allowed to see what was happening. This is one of the reasons we have this corporate whoring . They get away with murder because theres no oversight. This outsourcing good jobs and insourcing foreign ownership of our country was good for a few rich people while it kills the middle class of the US. We know whats important to them. And it aint you. Unless you happen to be Paris Hiltons brother or an heir to the Carnegies.
