What Do Gerald R. Ford and George W. Bush Have In Common?

Ford assumed the Presidency upon the resignation of Richard M. Nixon. Facing impeachment proceedings for his role in the Watergate scandal and alleged cover-up, Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. Ford is the only unelected President (sic) of the United States.

http://inaugural.senate.gov/history/chronology/grford1974.htm

Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr., 38th president of the United States (1974–77), who, as 40th vice president, succeeded to the presidency on the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon under the process decreed by the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the Constitution and thereby became the nation's only unelected chief executive (sic).

11. Uh, he was ELECTED
He was ELECTED as VP, with a duty to succeed to the presidency upon the death of the incumbent. And when he ran again, he WON. He elected not to run a second time, because he knew it would be a rough, uphill climb and he might not succeed.

Garfield and Lincoln and McKinley's VPs, who were elected on their tickets, also assumed the presidential duties. It was a 'politician in waiting' role and responsibility back then.

But Ford differed--he was appointed, as was Bush in 00 (though by the Supreme Court)....he flat out stole the contest in 04, and one day it WILL be proven, I do believe.

"But Ford differed--he was appointed, as was Bush in 00 (though by the Supreme Court)....he flat out stole the contest in 04, and one day it WILL be proven, I do believe."

Now if only we can get them to correct the history books.

Ford is NOT the only unelected president. Let's set the record straight!

How about Andrew Johnson?

Ford was the only pResident never elected President OR Vice President.

And why pick on him? Keep your vitriol going against the current Repugs not the ones that don't matter any more.

13. Uh, BUSH was APPOINTED in 00--by the US Supreme Court
Not ELECTED.

Remember that five to four vote? That was a vote for a majority decision, not a vote to elect. And the majority decision said Appoint the Monkey to Rule Over the Land...in essence....because it would be "too hard" to do it any other way....

Jerry Ford was an adopted child from tough means who worked his way through
college & law school.
Jerry Ford was an all American center @ the University of Michigan.
Jerry Ford's golden retriever once took a crap on the floor in a room
when Jerry was President .... a secret serviceman or an aid went to clean it up
but Ford stopped him and said, "I don't expect any man to do that for me." He then
cleaned it up himself.
Jerry Ford went along way to healing a country that really needed it after Dick Nixon.
Jerry Ford pardoned Nixon because Nixon's post watergate "stuff" was taking up
over 50% of his time .... he did it even though he knew it would kill his election chances.
Jerry Ford was skiing black diamond ski runs into his 80s.

Although I disagreed with his politics Ford is worlds better then bush.

BTW Ford's quote about Poland turned out to be true ..... Solidarity & Lech Welsa ring any bells?

We are no better then rush & clinton haters when we paint with a broad brush.

Although I very much disagree with Ford's politics and some of his appointments still
haunt us he & his family are so much better then bush's it is not funny.

How many lives did Betty help talking openly about her cancer, her addictions,
birth control, being pro choice, and smart about sex?

18. Jerry Ford was an all American Football Player
@ the University of Michigan.

Somehow i doubt you ever had or will ever have that level of coordination.

Although I disagreed with his politics the man was an athlete.

He was skiing black diamond runs well into his 80s.

20. Just having a discussion on this with my 12yo daughter last night
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 11:02 PM by woodsprite
at McDonalds. Daughter was relating all this to the Teapot Dome scandal, and Harding's "Ohio Gang" cabinet and the oil scandals of the time. She said "It's funny all the ties these criminals have to Ohio, isn't it Mom?" She was saying how all these major Presidential scandals seem to be Republican. She said something about Harding not making it to see the end of his term. I reminded her that Pres' elected in a year ending in "0" historically have died in office of natural causes or had some type of attempt made on their life. Then I added UNTIL the 2000 election and said "Oh, wait. That's right. He wasn't the person who WON the election. If Gore had been inaugaurated, THEN it probably would have held true". Also mentioned to her that Delaware has been a bellweather state for Pres. elections UNTIL the 2000 and 2004 elections. Must mean something. ;)

As we got ready to leave, I turned to get my coat and there was a Marine recruiter sitting near listening to our convo. He didn't say anything, but don't know what he thought. It was "obvious" he was there to have dinner with his girl who works behind the counter ;)
