1. Maybe he doesn't want the public to know
he's bald.

There's a picture of him in USA Today where he's wearing this fedora-like hat and a black trenchcoat. He looks like a member of the Gambino crime family. It's PERFECT.

And is trying to dress the part. I question some of his taste in attire.

I asked my dad, 'What's that about? Does he think he's Al Capone? Nobody wears hats like that anymore?' and my dad, a *-supporter, said, dryly, 'He is Al Capone.' bwhahahahaha

Seriously, though, I think more men should wear fedoras. Tres sexy on liberals.

8. Doesn't he "practice" orthodox judaism. I think the hat may be required -
the head covered. That still doesn't quite explain the Zuit Suit! Or the choice of fedora. Baseball cap fine.

Enough already. Let's concentrate of what is under the hat.

34. A writer at salon.com says the hat was a signal to the orthodox
that Abramoff was supposedly contrite and doing some sort of penance (which is probably the wrong word). Of course a sign is not the actual object referenced. But applegrove is probably not off the mark to suggest it has something to do with Abramoff's religion, however insincere he may be.

Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 03:42 AM by Behind the Aegis
"Ukrainian milkman Tevye clings desperately to the old Jewish traditions while all around him the world changes, day by day. His three daughters marry men he considers more and more unacceptable, and the ruling Russian government's anti-Semitism threatens to drive him from his home. Based on the enormously successful Broadway show with great performances and unforgettable songs. Academy Award Nominations: 8, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--Topol. Academy Awards: 3, including Best (Adapted) Song Score."*

Don't take my word, go rent it. $3 and and 2 hours, and you can decide for yourself.

On edit: The synopsis is from this *link.

42. That is not helping! The juxtaposition of trite delivery with serious
issues is why musicals are hard. I am further away. Though I will readily admit it is likely a good musical from what you say. Just not for me.

43. That is the point of some musicals.
They take hard subjects and make them more palatable. I believe it was Gilda Radner that said, "I laugh, I cried, it became a part of me." It wasn't about "Fiddler...," but perhaps you might want to laugh, and cry, and see what it does for you.

49. Don't take offense. I'm the last person on the planet who can deal with
a persucratory story. Could not watch "life is beautiful" "the pianist" or that Jim Carey movie where he is followed around.

Those are my limits.

These days.

If someone is going to be targetted - then I need them to fight back. And I doubt very much fiddler on the roof is a war movie.

It is just where I am. Has nothing to do with fiddler.

It does appear you didn't know that this (horns on the head) is an anti-Semitic slur. So, I will give you the story, which is actually a little funny. Back in the middle ages, when painting Biblical scenes was all the rage, a painting of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments was done (I can't remember who did it). As was all the rage, Biblical figures often had rays of light coming from their head (usually because that was how it was written in various texts). Some where along the line, a verse got mistranslated that said "Horns sprung from the head of Moses," instead of "Light sprung from the head of Moses." So the painter, painted small horns (and light) on the head of Moses. It was then that the connection to the Devil was made (Jews are the Spawn of Satan). As a Jew, I even had some ask if I had small horns on my head (not meaning to be ugly, just thinking it was an ethnic malady) and if that is why Jews were yarmulkes (to cover the horns).

On edit: Changed the title, sounded to snide.

44. Thanks for the explanation.
I just didn't feel like getting into it. Several years ago, a Jewish friend on another forum told us about a college roommate who asked to see her HORNS!!! This chick was from the Bible Belt and actually believed that Jews had horns! I've never had the experience myself, and I was pretty shocked that such ignorance could still exist in the 20th century.

I was 30 before I heard the expression "Jew someone down." I was 35 (now 36) before I heard..."well, they kiked me." (meaning they stole something). Of course, I live in OK and I still hear about people "nigger-rigging" things. :eyes: Sometimes, it seems the further we progress, the more we regress!

I agree that Jack Abramoff is the spawn of Satan. It's flat-out embarrassing that he's Jewish, and I hope someone excommunicates him soon. I know you didn't realize that the mention of "horns" in this context was an unfortunate choice of words. Check out the explanation from Behind the Aegis right below your post.

Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 11:24 PM by TahitiNut
Abramoff is under the protection of the FBI. They may, out of an abundance of caution, have very heightened security precautions in place for all scheduled times that Abramoff appears in public. That overcoat sure looked like it was covering a flak jacket to me. Let's be clear. If some person or persons were to plan an assassination attempt on Abramoff, they'd be likely to rely on some scheduled court appearance that they'd be able to set up and prepare for. All else being equal, it's sure be more effective to plan something for a scheduled appearance than to try to lay in wait where his appearance is less reliable.

OK. Heightened security means provisions for rooftop snipers and observers and probably helicopter extraction. It'd be one helluva lot easier for those personnel to keep track of and identify Abramoff among a crowd of guys all looking somewhat the same if Abramoff is wearing some kind of distinctive headgear. I think it'd help the guys on the ground during the confusion, too. It helps the threat less since they can't use it in their plans.

That's my theory. Have at it.
