Former Top Judge Says US Risks Edging Near to Dictatorship...
· Sandra Day O'Connor warns of rightwing attacks
· Lawyers 'must speak up' to protect judiciary

'Sandra Day O'Connor, a Republican-appointed judge who retired last month after 24 years on the supreme court, has said the US is in danger of edging towards dictatorship if the party's rightwingers continue to attack the judiciary.

In a strongly worded speech at Georgetown University, reported by National Public Radio and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Ms O'Connor took aim at Republican leaders whose repeated denunciations of the courts for alleged liberal bias could, she said, be contributing to a climate of violence against judges.

Ms O'Connor, nominated by Ronald Reagan as the first woman supreme court justice, declared: "We must be ever-vigilant against those who would strong-arm the judiciary."'

4. good point
but do you think they KNEW just how horrible George is? Do you believe they KNEW that he would ride rough shod over Congress and the Judiciary? If they KNEW and installed him, then they need to be impeached as well. I think they were taken by surprise. I wasn't. I knew he was a monster. But some people ....

8. Any way you cut it
she bailed knowing full well she would be replaced with someone that will facilitate the exact thing she warns us of. Thanks a lot Sandra, may you live many years to enjoy what you and the other members of SCOTUS have done to our country. At least Rehnquist died trying to make it to the next presidential term while you abandoned us to the regime that you were instrumental in installing in power and, by so doing, increased that power.

11. all these frontier conservatives hole-up on the spacious ranches...
and rarely come out from behind their barbed wire fences unless it is to receive a high priced speaking fee...i'm a little remiss as to why she doesn't understand what she has helped to do, and why now the 'warning'

15. If the SCOTUS put Bush into power, can the SCOTUS vote to remove him?
That would be cool if they could, but only in this case. The reasoning being, "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it."

12. Exactly!! Go fuck yourself, Sandra...you put the dictator in office.
Not to mention the fact that your retiring has allowed the little dictator to add another judge to "the party."

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

3. Thank you, Sandra for being part of the SCOTUS cabal that submitted an
ILLEGAL, non-precedented ruling that allowed the bushco* junta to seize control of the United States of America. Yes, honey, we are on the verge of a dictatorship and YOU WERE A COLLABORATOR AND FACILITATOR. I guess things just aren't turning out how you and your partisan cohorts envisioned, eh? And one final question: What do you think of Al Gore now?

6. Many conservatives are getting an epiphany.
It helps no one to rub their noses in it.

13. Oh please...the conservatives having an epiphany is like the
Captain of the Titanic realizing he hit an iceberg...

A "little too late"...don't you think?

O'Connor put the little dictator in office...she should have her face rubbed in it.

14. If it takes a conservative to convince another
and another that what WE have been saying all along is indeed reality, then I say let her go for it.
They need someone to tell them the truth.

16. If she does think that Bush should be removed, then isn't she admitting
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 09:20 PM by file83
that her "judgement" of putting him into power was wrong? If so, then she should STEP THE FUCK DOWN (but not until the Dems gain control back in 2006! Otherwise Bush will replace her with someone like Pat Robertson or some shit.)

7. Hilarious.
Putting aside Ms. O'Connor's singularly influential role in installing the Bush regime for a moment- it's still ridiculous. We've been 'edging toward dictatorship' for several years now. I guess it's just getting a little *too* fascist for her now, with assaults on her beloved judiciary.

17. Bush trampling American citizens rights is "OK" to Sandra, but when
he starts moving in on her territory, it's now a "dictatorship". What the fuck ever. She's an Elitist.
