Sign Russ' Censure Resolution
http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/page/petition/censure0306

"This week, I will introduce a resolution in the Senate to censure the President. The reasons for censure are clear: the President authorized a program that illegally wiretaps American citizens, on American soil, without a court order; he also actively mislead the public and Congress on the existence and legality of the program.

Congress can no longer stand by and allow such disregard of the Constitution, the rule of law, and two branches of government to continue. Censure is an appropriate first step in demanding accountability from a President who disregards the rights and freedoms on which our country was founded.

Sign the Resolution

Every American wants to fight terrorism and fight those who wish to do our country harm. We all stand together in that fight. Every American wants the government to be able to wiretap terrorists, and we can under current law! However, this President, or any President for that matter, cannot decide which laws they will obey or cherry-pick which articles of the Constitution they will uphold - and this President continues to do just that. He must be held accountable.

Sign the Resolution

I will continue to push my colleagues to stand up to a President who plays fast and loose with the facts, our freedoms, and our nation's trust. Please sign my resolution to help send the message that we can't afford to let the President be cavalier with our rights.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold

Russ Feingold
United States Senator
Honorary Chair, Progressive Patriots Fund"

Won't this blunt any future attempt at Impeachment? And give cover so Republicans can distance themselves from the President in November?

14. This is the beginning of the Impeachment process. Please go to Rep.
Conyers' Action Site to read about the 3 bills that he sponsored to begin the IMPEACHMENT PROCESS and sign Conyers' citizen co-sponsor petition and write your Congressperson to support Conyers' bills and your Senators to support Feingold's resolution of Censure. This BEGINS the process, it does nothing to prevent Impeachment but is an evidence gathering.

Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 11:43 AM by mmonk
especially since Feingold said impeachment was radical? Isn't a resolution (for an inquiry into articles of impeachment) the first step?

54. MMonk, please read John Conyers on his site about his Resolution for
Inquiry into Impeachable offenses. The House of Representatives has to start the Impeachment process then it goes to the Senate for vote. Conyers only has 22 House co-sponsors. Please write to your Congressman and ask him to to cosponsor Conyers BEGINNING OF IMPEACHMENT and please sign the Citizens cosponsor of the bills.

Sign Letter to begin Impeachment Inquiry in the House of Representatives:
http://www.johnconyers.com Conyer's Action Items

"DU Activist Corps Action: Impeachment/Out Of Iraq Demonstrations
A coalition of liberal websites is currently organizing a grassroots effort to hold peaceful demonstrations in all 435 Congressional districts. The mission is to persuade each of our Representatives to support:

1. IMPEACHMENT: Support John Conyers' Watergate-style investigation (H.Res. 635) of Bush's Iraq War lies - and also accelerate the process by introducing Articles of Impeachment for Bush and Cheney.

2. GETTING OUT OF IRAQ: Support John Murtha's bill to remove troops from Iraq (H.J. Res 73) and Jim McGovern's bill to end funding for the Iraq War (H.R. 4232)."

Democratic Underground is joining with Democrats.com, Progressive Democrats of America, After Downing Street, Gold Star Families for Peace, Hip Hop Caucus, Democracy Rising, and Velvet Revolution, to support this effort.
Senator Feingold is courageously supporting Rep. Conyers and all who want Impeachment but first their has to be an investigation and Censure investigation will help both Rep. Conyers bills and add information to the Impeachment Inquiry. One step at a time. Censure will in no way block Impeachment but help the process to get formally started.

33. One step at a time, mmonk...
as much as I'd like impeachment, I think we have to start somewhere and censure is a better place than sitting on our collective asses, twiddling our thumbs until there is enough of a majority for impeachment. And I'm not at all sure that will happen. So please, consider starting on the smallest step and building up to the big one.

as far as conduct goes, should be impeached or scrap impeachment as a protection for the country and it's constitution, because it will mean nothing.

Added comment:

This is a good first step, but it does not hold the President accountable for his actions and for violating the law, trampling over our Constitution, and for violating our civil liberties and right to privacy. Please consider Impeachment as a suitable remedy before our country sinks even deeper into a neo-fascist dictatorship.

45. Censure isn't the point
The point is to get the GOP on record supporting the domestic spying. The GOP (and Dems) have a choice: censure the president or go on record supporting illegal warrantless wiretapping.

Feingold has placed a box around the right wing. There is no way out.

Everytime I see that tactic it makes it look as it it's a throwaway gesture. Like, what Feingold's really trying to do is to build an email list to use to support his run for the democratic nomination for president.

Am I just cynical?

93. You're probably both correct AND cynical but you....
...are not alone. Of course they keep these email addresses & names - it's a nice database record of just who supports what issues. I just hope this data is never used by BushCo to "round dissenters up". Hopefully it never gets in their hands.

130. Petition signers' names could be easily faked as has
been recently shown in republicon petition drives, voter regs and gotv pushes. Should the need arise to actually verify that the signers are real people, some sort of real contact info must be presented.

140. A mailing address would be better then...
... I use fake or throwaway email addresses all the time.

Actually, what you say is entirely true and the ease with which the wrong addresses can be used is why these online petitions are not worth the electrons they're written on.

I participate, because it's so easy, but I've yet to see an online petition make any difference.

143. I often hear (on c-spin) the powers-that-be talking about
the HUGE backlash generated on the internet over some issue or other. I, too, have some reservations about the efficacy, but, on the hope that it does have some effect, participate gladly.

114. Done, and my comments to Senator Feingold:

I fully support your actions today and I applaud you for your courage and integrity. Point by point, your logic was impeccable, and I believe your conclusions to be so obvious that is ludicrous to even consider that a debate would be necessary or warranted.

I particularily enjoyed your initial comments that used the Federalist Paper #51 to support your case: "But what is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place OBLIGE IT TO CONTROL ITSELF." This administration, perhaps more so than any other in American History, has proven the amazing wisdom of our constitution, and at the same time has revealed it's potential frailties. We have to protect it, and you did that today. I thank you most sincerely.

Where are the rest of the Democrats on this issue? Shame on them if they don't vote for Censure.

Through deception and deciept, they have misled and lied to us for too long. There should be censure, impeachment and conviction of this gang of thieves being led by nothing more than mobster in cowboy boots.

You can feel it. The number of times the I word is mentioned in the press is increasing, *'s poll numbers keep falling (and maybe we'll see the SS road trip approval-dropping affect re-created again!); towns are voting for impeachment all over the place, people are speaking out again. I really think we are at the point where it is now almost inevitable. No matter what they do, people don't believe them or trust them anymore, it's just a matter of time and piling on. The more they do, the less people believe them.

I hope I'm right.

137. Go Russ
He has spoken!

I liken this time to the concept of the "elephant in the living room" which is an idea know to those who are familiar with AA and Al-Anon. The alcoholic is the unseen "elephant in the living room." Eveyone in the household walks around it, does not speak of it, keeps living as though it is not there. In the denial of the "elephant in the living room" the household believes that their life is normal and continues for as long as this denial will carry them. In the process their lives become increasingly constricted, the space more and more limited as they all make more space for the "elephant in the living room."

This "elephant in the living room" does not contribute in a responsible or self-respecting way to the life within this house. This person is concerned with maintaining the diversions, to hiding that they are the problem, that the rest of the household must help to maintain the diversions so that the problem can continue to grow unhibited by the truth of reality. They all take their parts in the failure of the home.

Russ has spoken of this situation from reality. This administration is the "elephant in the living room" for all of America. We are willingly choosing to deny that the president breaking our laws is a problem for all of us. We are willingly choosing the constrict our lives in order to maintain our delusion that life in this country is normal, that there is nothing wrong.

Until we listen to Russ and recognize that our country is in deep trouble by denying that as a country we have a major problem with the "elephant in the living room" allowing the president to continue to break our laws over and over again. This is not a responsible, self-respecting, democratic life for Americans.

WHEN we begin to see the problem with allowing our elected officials all the way to the president to break the law again and again we will begin on our journey to repair our system of government so that it will be able to serve all people.

We The People deserve no less.
