Why not vaccinate the Right against wrong?

March 13, 2006

BY NEIL STEINBERG SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Opening shot

Americans who hate George W. Bush -- and there seem to be a lot of them -- really hate him.

Not polite disdain, not curled-lip dismay, but howling, foaming, towel-biting, slam-your-forehead-on-the-floor loathing. Usually, I find that kind of reaction just too glittery-eyed and crazed to embrace; he is, after all, the president.

But I felt a shudder of deep-bone revulsion boiling up in me while reading Michael Specter's report in the March 13 New Yorker connecting the dots on how the Bush administration has kneecapped science in this country.

From quashing stem cell research to promoting the teaching of Christian creation myth in public schools, from gagging government scientists to stifling anti-global warming efforts, the Bush administration is leading a theocratic assault on rationality that we would snicker at in another country but barely notice unfolding here. snip

I knew that the moral mullahs of this country point obsessively to disease and pregnancy in their campaign for sexual inhibition. But I didn't quite realize -- and it embarrasses me to admit this -- that they are also against curing such diseases, so as not to encourage sin. An anti-HIV vaccine, rather than being celebrated, might actually be denied FDA approval -- in this country, of course. The rest of the modern world, unencumbered, moves steadily into the future without us.

12. I don't know
I utterly and truly despise Bush and his cronies. When people accused me of hating Bush, I used to say "Define hate, and I'll tell you whether or not I hate him." I'd usually add that I don't wish any physical harm to him and no harm at all to anyone in his family.

After Katrina, I realized I hadn't hated him before because now I do. I still don't want any physical harm to come to him, and I wish nothing ill against his family (except, maybe for his loathsome mother). What I want for him is utter and total political disgrace. I want every one of his crimes to come to light on the front pages of all the newspapers. I want his nose rubbed in every single death he's caused in the Gulf Coast, among our soldiers, and for every Iraqi he's killed.

I can't watch him without screaming at the teevee, so I gave up. I may fit that guy's description. I'd like to know who purchased his clue. Moron.

:hi: Just want to point out Steinberg isn't a conservative, here is another column that has a few points in it that reveals he's actually more of a liberal kind of Democrat.

"I hold out more hope for the right to be re-programmed toward tolerance than for gays to be cured of their sexuality. "

"Why should White House adviser Karl Rove apologize for painting Democrats as a bunch of fawning cowards who wanted to "offer therapy and understanding to our attackers" after 9/11? The shame isn't so much that he said it, but that it's what he and his Republican pals truly believe."

Of course, you are absolutely correct about the "Conservative Projectorama."

More, But you can just take my word for it! ;-)

4. My hate is totally rational
He deserted his military unit; I was in at the time so he deserted me. He ripped off stockholders via insider trading; I invest in the stockmarket so he ripped off me. He intentionally lied to Americans about the war which has killed 2300+ of American Servicemembers. He lied to me and my teammates died because of it. I'm neither glittery eyed nor glazed. And I could go on and on, but my choir needs no preaching.

Thanks for the post.

Was he not alive during the Clinton era?

Or a Senator - just mention Teddy Kennedy's name and watch their eyes roll back in their heads and the spittle emerge from their mouths.

The culture of life, my ass.

"The really jaw-dropping part is the administration's view of any medical advance that might lessen the wages of sin. Merck is trying to get FDA approval for a vaccine against the virus that causes cervical cancer and is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the country. Lives would be saved by the vaccine, but the politicized Bush FDA will probably deny approval, as the disease -- like all VD -- is a handy ally to the Religious Right in its battle against sex."

a couple of years ago that I can sit here in the comfort of my home, wired up to the net several hours a day getting all well-informed, and be miles ahead of the jerks who are SUPPOSED to know what's going on because they're paid to do that as a living,

BUT

they are CONSUMERS of their own news as well.

Get it? We all know that consuming MSM news esp. TV will NOT make one well-informed. So, they're consumers of MSM news and they're about as ill-informed as all the other consumers of MSM news.

Reminds me of a WilL Rogers quote that goes something like this:

"The problem is not that you're ignorant, the problem is what you know that just ain't so."

country, he might be surprised at the other areas where the Bushbots have destroyed and denied decades of research and professional expertise: education, aviation, land management, you name it. I have this conversation in any social and professional setting I can by asking the question, "How has your field been compromised since Bush came into office?" The replies are amazing. From medicine, transportation, education, health research, you name it -- the Bushies are "redoing" data bases, tossing out research that doesn't fit the party line, and barrelling on down the road.

29. This is one of the safe issues that GOPers can start distancing themselves
from Bush on.

Bush's absurdist science policy has never, ever been popular with anyone. So these rubberstamping douchebags can now point to that and say "I don't agree with the President! I never agreed with the President on science!" Ta da! The appearance of not being a rubberstamping douchebag. The mere fucking appearance, that is.

But we will have to start asking ourselves a real strategy question. As much as we'd like to lord it over these idiots in an "I told you so" posture, it may be politically important to welcome them to the fold, to make them feel less defeated when they come over. Something to start thinking about.

38. I hate duhbya for what he's done to America ...
and I'm not even American.

I see a country that should be great, that should be leading the world in caring for and providing opportunities for its citizens, that should be a shining example to the rest of the world, that should be the country that so many rabid chauvenists imagine it to be.

I see wonderful people here who, between them, have everything that their country needs to be what it could be.

And I see those greedy, lying ass-holes turning America into a replica of all we could fear in the most fundamentalist of muslim countries, while my republican friends judge the merits of the war in Iraq by the current cost of driving their SUVs, and advocate "nuking the hell out of those arab bastards in Iran".

And, as for that pate-patting-pervert's callousness in partying while the poor of New Orleans drowned and starved, well, if I had the chance to kill him I wouldn't ... not until I'd made him long for death for a year or two.

His pat on the back to Brown afterwards was not done in ignorance. He was congratulating Brown on carrying out his secret directive, to prevent anyone, anywhere, from doing anything to help.

I actually thought he was more a middle-of-the-roader Dem.

The fact that I'm having trouble remembering one way or the other is about all I've got to define his general stance. :-)

Edit: He's a liberal-flavored Dem. He has "high hopes" for Obama. Here's an old column I pulled up. I've gotta say personally, I'd hate it if anyone called me a "conservative" these days. :-)

55. Utter contempt, disgust and total lack of respect for * does not = hate.
It's a sign of love and respect for the values (which * distorts), institutions (which * destroys), and laws (which * ignores) of this country which made it great.

Anyone in this country who questions or criticises this administration is labled a "Bush hater" or "unpatriotic" by his sheeple followers.

Fuck 'em.

56. Well-written. The author strikes me as a humanist...
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 06:10 AM by Hekate
...who just couldn't imagine how contrary to common sense Bush science policies would become. There's nothing wrong with him -- he's had an epiphany.

The Bush juggernaut is beyond comprehension to any rational human being. They have been relentless from their first hour in the Oval Office, and they have installed their minions in every office of government, every one of them with agenda in hand.

No one person or committee can hope to keep up with it all, and those who try end up rather as the author describes, looking a bit nuts: "Not polite disdain, not curled-lip dismay, but howling, foaming, towel-biting,slam-your-forehead-on-the-floor loathing. Usually, I find that kind of reaction just too glittery-eyed and crazed to embrace..."

None of us ever thought we'd look like that, and yet occasionally we can't help it, because we are trying to wrap our minds around the incomprehensible insanity that is the Bush regime.

It's a good article -- thanks for the post.

Hekate

59. So what's more hateful.... the xtian anti-science, the war-as first resort
foreign policy (PNAC), or the pro-corporation (pro-elite) anti-citizen domestic economic & regulatory policies?

I think the last 2 possibly are more hateful.

60. Link to a Q&A with the author of the story he cites
The original, horrifying, teeth-gnashing, jaw-dropping story is in the March 13 New Yorker, which is sitting in front of me, but the article isn't available on line.

The author answers questions about the article here:

/Screw cable - for a $50 subscription for a weekly magazine, The New Yorker is the best entertainment value in America (even if they did publish a lying hack job about Wesley Clark....)

when it comes to people "hating" Bush. In their little Worlds of right white might, they somehow believe nobody else can justify their anger towards another "Conservative". Fucking megolomaniacal assholes.

Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 01:09 PM by Harvey Korman
They talk about how these religious hate groups are trying to block vaccines for HPV and other STDs. There's actually a part where they talk about finding an HIV vaccine, and this dirtbag from the AFA or whatever hate group says something like, "Well, if that happens, we'll have to take a look at that." Almost like, "we'll decide if you little people should continue to suffer." Fucking sociopaths. :grr:
