Isaac Hayes quits "South Park?" Sheesh, who'll do the voice of Chef?

he is pissed over the Scientology episode....trampling on religious beliefs etc., but as parker/stone point out....it didn't bother him so much when it was Christians, Jews, Muslims and Mormons they were skewering....did Scientology heirarchy FORCE him to quit?

The soul singer is unhappy at religious gags

Soul singer Isaac Hayes has quit cartoon 'South Park' after an episodes lampooning religion.

The star who has provided the voice for character Chef since the show's inception, has become upset at recent shows that have attacked spirituality.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes said in a statement after he announced he had been asked to be let out of his contract.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honoured," he added. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

A recent episode of the programme sent up Tom Cruise and Scientology, which is also Haynes' religion, although he did not specifically mention that show in his statement.

However 'South Park''s co-creator Matt Stone declared that the episode - 'Trapped In The Closet' - was the reason behind Haynes' move, suggesting his respect for religious beliefs was narrow.

"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology," Stone told the Associated Press. "He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of cheques - with our show making fun of Christians."

Awwww yeah.

Is that the scientology episode was aired literally months ago, and wasn't the last episode in the season. If Hayes was so mad, why didn't he quit when he saw the script last summer!?

From my limited understanding of Scientology, there is a hierarchy of church elite that may have pressured Hayes to quit. But then again, this is mere speculation on my part.

I vaguely remember a Heavens Gate / Jonestown style thing (a bit like the Blainetology episode in SP), but I'm about 7 years behind current episodes & haven't watched it in years.

It was a cult but more along the lines of your standard collective-living cult (brainwashing, starvation and slave labor)than a doomsday/apocalyptic cult thing.

In actuality, The Simpsons has been pretty respectful of religion and the beliefs behind the major ones. The humor seems to poke more at the ritualist practices that occur during the services and the hypocrisy of the ministers, rabbis, etc.

I've never seen any sacred cows on South Park.

It had an adorably likable, slightly dimwitted Bush who barely resembled the real one. It was one of the worst parodies ever on TV, and was justly canceled.

I remember tuning in to it, hoping to see Bush bashed, and basically saw a tepid 80's sitcom, except with Bush/Pickles lookalikes as the stars. Stone and Parker love Bush and hate liberals above all things.

mentions that the church was less than thrilled with the South Park episode criticizing it. I was reading it to kill time at work so the information isn't burned into my brain but I think it said that the Church of Scientology managed to make sure the episode won't air again.
