Mother of slain US Marine creates tribute to him on her Hummer
Ms. Comfort's loss is horrible. Remembering her son and his buddies via art on a 2006 Hummer, well...I don't know if she realizes the irony.

=====

GRIEVING MOM: Karla Comfort wipes away a tear as she stands next to her hand-painted Hummer that she drove Thursday to Camp Pendleton.

CAMP PENDLETON – The images on the black Hummer are a rolling tribute to the fallen. The young faces stare back at you from black-tinted windows. Some wear Marine Corps dress blues. Others smile, their heads adorned by traditional camouflage caps.

Many Marines stop in their tracks as they walk by the vehicle for the first time, fixated on the memorial to the 10 Marines from the 2nd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment killed in Iraq last year by a roadside bomb.

They salute. Two others make the sign of the cross.

The Hummer is that striking.

"My favorite part is the scene from heaven," said Karla Comfort, whose son, Lance Cpl. John Holmason, 20, was killed on Dec. 1, 2005, along with nine others based at Twentynine Palms....

4. Everyone grieves in their own way.
That's really all anyone can say. It is pretty  though...

6. That's about all you can say.
Note to my survivors: do not do anything like this for me!

3. Her son was killed.
She's trying to justify the heroism that cost her son's life. Let's adorne this gas guzzling militaresque vehicle with tacky art.

I'm only slightly torn here. For all we know, John Holmason, would have been more heroic working at a library.

It's just not appropriate, in my opinion. The shiny chrome wheels and armor-all are messed up.

5. I feel pity for her loss. But at some point you really gotta wonder
where the logic that takes you from A to B to C went astray in her mind.

7. I'm getting to the point where I feel actual sympathy
for people who are so unenligthened.

Really.

9. I'm sorry for her loss too
but this is so ... okay, gotta say it.. disgusting.

My son hasn't even been deployed yet, but for him, and all those other kids over there, I have quit driving completely. I hadn't driven much in the past year anyway, but now I walk. If it's too far to walk, I use the bus. No rides from friends or roomies. And as I walk, I see all these vehicles, half of them suv's and oversize trucks with ONE person in them, rarely two, and never full.
Everytime I see a Hummer in the city, I have a nearly uncontrollable urge to scream a question at them... "How many soldiers per gallon does that thing get?" I've restrained myself, so far.

8. Oh dear
how unfortunate. Well, in her eyes, the hummer is very military, I guess.

10. I hope this somehow brings them peace
The loss of a child is the most wicked pain in the world. All my best to them as they find their own way to heal.
