3. The journal and its features are great Skinner! Thanks! One suggestion
if I may. When you add your post to the journal you come to a page that has a button to view the entry in your journal. Can you also add a button that will take you back to the thread that you were on? I know you can use the back button to do so, but I think it might be a bit easier if you can place a button on that page to do it too. Thanks for listening and thanks again for all! You rock!

7. I'm liking the My DU feature, too!
DU is getting sexier and more user-friendly than ever! You guys are doing such a fantastic job!

Meanwhile, Rimjob extorts tens of thousands of dollars out of his sheeple and the website STILL looks like a usenet forum from 1997.

12. Usenet news readers were much better than rimjob's interface.
It reminds me more of the old compuserve service back in the day when 1200 baud was hot-spit.

It's a great way for everyone, both newbies and old hands at DU, to check out posts by people outside their comfort zone. :)

Great job once again, guys! Kudos to y'all.

14. Will there be actual discussion for the journal posts? :)
The journals are well worth the wait.

When I first saw the "Discuss" link in my journal items showed multiple "replies", I thought "how could people have already commented I just added this thing 10 seconds ago!?!". I realized the "Discuss" was referring to the discussion that post had gotten, not new commentary.

Will you be integrating the journal entries as new "OPs" for ongoing discussion and commentary?

And while I'm suggesting, a "Table of Contents" module at the top of the journal would be very nice, especially if the user could choose which entries could go.

Oh yeah, I couldn't find the KITCHEN SINK anywhere either! LOL ;)

Thanks and keep up the great progress!

15. I do NOT like My DU
It buries My Posts and My Journal under a 2nd layer (aside from the "almost anywhere" access to your journal) and it waves stuff in front of my face I'm not the least bit interested in, like pretty much everything else. Nor do I want all that other stuff on the page -- PMs and so forth.

I really dislike it.

It would be less offensive with My posts and My Journal taken out and accessible as they used to be. Make My DU a menu item somewhere else. Ormake it nearly all-inclusive of everything, which will leave room on icon row to keep My Posts separate and unburied.

16. I think we should be able to customize the page more
and so you could choose which "panels" are shown on your individual My DU page. So you could get rid of, say, the icons at the top or the buddy list or PMs...whatever. Or change their location. That way, people who want the extra stuff can have it; people who want just My Posts could have that, too.

But that's not going to happen for a few weeks.

24. I don't get it. So I CAN'T make a journal entry DIRECTLY?
The ONLY way to get something into my journal is to post in a forum, then click that post into the journal?

I would've assumed there'd be a button somewhere that said "create new journal entry". Guess I'da been wrong.

I wanted to start putting journal entries in about reading Guns, Germs, and Steel. I have no idea what forum they should go to, and don't feel like looking. I just want them in my journal. Is that so wrong?

lol

25. I guess we kinda thought people wanted to put their journal entries...
...in a forum where other DUers would be more likely to see it. Guess we'da been wrong, too.

For now, you have to post in a forum first. In the future, we will likely add a feature that allows you to post directly to your journal. But right now that feature does not exist.

I know it's hard work to figure out where to post stuff, particularly if you don't feel like it. Let me help you. Guns Germs and Steel would fit as a topic in any of the following forums:

Science:

Books: Nonfiction

26. It IS hard work IT IS!
{stamps foot imperiously}

:rof:

Thanks!

You PROMISE it won't get moved outta GD if I put something like a weekly ongoing thoughts-while-reading-book-journal-post there?

And note that the reason I wanted to post directly to my journal was not to avoid people seeing it, but because I thought it would get moved from GD, and I didn't know whether or not the journal link would be able to persist through a move of the base post. Didn't wanna deal with any hassle....

thanks again!

If you want it to stay open for a while, I think maybe you shouldn't put it in GD. There is a chance it might fall into the archives if it sits for too long without any responses. Particularly if there is some big news story that sends a lot of traffic to GD. There is a great group of folks in the Science forum who would probably appreciate reading about this topic.

I'm pretty sure it won't get moved out of GD, but I can't make that promise. This place is so busy, and there's so much going on, that sometimes I don't know for sure what decisions the mods might make.

I'm pretty sure the journal link will work if a thread gets moved. It's supposed to work. But so far I don't think it's been tested, so I can't say for sure. If a post does get orphaned, you probably could delete it from your journal and then re-add it.
