"Shortage of cheap labor" due to abortions ... Sen. Nancy Schaefer (R-Turn
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 04:34 PM by RedEarth
Democrats have been buzzing about comments made by state Sen. Nancy Schaefer (R-Turnerville, Georgia Republican legislator ) at a recent eggs-and-issues breakfast in Hart County. We quote from the Hartwell Sun newspaper: "Commenting on illegal immigration, Schaefer said 50 million abortions have been performed in this country, causing a shortage of cheap American labor. 'We could have used those people,' she said."

about half way down the page.....

here is a link to the Hartwell Sun newspaper article.....

50th District Senator Nancy Schaefer, who serves on the economic development committee, mentioned jobs, industry and tourism as issues needing attention. She said we need to “make Georgia a destination.”

Commenting on illegal immigration, Schaefer said 50 million abortions have been performed in this country, causing a shortage of cheap American labor. “We could have used those people,” she said.

and even more lovely comments from Ms.Nancy Schaefer

Senator Nancy Schaefer spoke these words in the State Senate Chamber in The Capitol of Georgia, on March 24, 2004.

Thank you - Mr. President. I rise for a point of personal privilege.

Tuesday morning - of this week, we began our Senate session with a message delivered by the Chaplain of the Day. His text was taken from Matthew 14 about King Herod and how the authority of that day had lost their conscience to the point of calling for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

I believe the element that called for the head of John the Baptist was the same element that crucified Jesus Christ.

It is also the same element that is taking the life of Terri Schiavo.

As the authorities said it was legal in the day of John the Baptist and legal in the day of Jesus Christ, authorities today say it is legal to starve a living, breathing women to death in Florida.

The whole world is watching America commit the murder on national TV of a young woman who was never offered the first moment of rehabilitation by her husband who clearly abandoned her 12 years ago.

Is not our authority today calling for the head of Terri Schiavo?

I have a feeling that won't play very well on Election Day.

8. If the Dems simply ran against some of the stupid statements
coming out of the mouths of Republicans (particularly those in the South and lower Midwest)- rather than trying to assuage and pander to those types, they'd have won the majority back years ago.

But instead of making the contrast clear- and nationalizing the campaign, their "strategists" blur the lines... and seemingly choose to lose.

61. I agree. . .
and in doing so, they are enraging the rest of the nation for their complete lack of effective leadership. This woman's remarks have no place in the state legislature - and she should be run out of office on a rail. . .

But I'm sure the Demos will be too afraid to even confront these statements.

against her (via commercials). How much more Racist could this scumbag be? And someone at the DNC should be coordinating getting moles into these conferences Nationwide to record the words of these nutjobs so we can use them against them.

95. This is the stuff to run a national campaign
against ALL Republicans with. Tar every last one of them. Who cares if it's demogoguery? Demogoguery works. And there's so much material out there to choose from... in their own words.

Associate it with them- and by implication, the people who vote for them.

That's what the far right's been doing for decades- guess what? It works.

The difference is, we don't have to be dishonest about it.

Call a spade a spade and lett thier candidates all over the country (and on the state and local level) go on the defensive and explain their lock step in barrel votes for a change.

every time they are in front of the camera. Bring this jughead and what she said up, and implicate the rest of the Reich wing by association. Every appearance on TV, every press conference. One of many talking points we could be using every day.

She laid it out on a SILVER platter, dressed, with Hors D'Oeuvres. "Wheeeeee! I just laid it all out for you! We only want a cheap, poor, disadvantaged, and desperate labor class to serve our entitled one! Since we can't enslave THEM anymore, we'll enslave their CLASS! Hahahah!"

As she hold up her glass of fine vintage champagne.

It's a meal. Let's eat.

That is why they have "Abstinence only" that is why they want to out law abortion. It's because they drive their economy with human blood. I have decided to not have children. that's right you fascists nazi Republic-cons, you can't have any more humans. If I ever have a child, it won't be in this fucked up country.

165. I think so too. I think if we vote a Democrat into office, their will be
the return of the draft. Because in the real world the Republicans know our young men and women are struggling in Iraq but feel if they hold out long enough, the Democrats will do it. Yeah, a Democrat will do it because in all reality, they started this war telling the troops that as soon as they get to Baghdad they were going home. "Mission Accomplished" If this were true, what the hell are they all still doing over there?

I don't want it. All I have is a son (27) and three nephews (16, 19, 19). I have a grandson but thank the Good Lord he is only 3.

It's typical Republican agenda . . . start a mess and leave it for the Dems to clean it up.

I'm still pissed at all the Democratic Senators that voted to give this idiot the power for it all and now they are all bitching about it. They get on CSPAN and talk the talk, but when it comes to voting on certain issues, they vote completely opposite of what they say. What is up with that?

I love your avatar. Keanu rocks my world. I had one similar but I couldn't get it to work. I have not been able to get anything to work as far as an avatar that changes faces and/or words. I have asked for help over and over but no one responds. Oh well!

the problem is always the file size. It's difficult to do anything too fancy with out the file size getting too big. Mine works because it has only 2 colors, that helps keep the file size down. I wanted to use this avatar here but can't because it's file size is too big:

145. Why do you think they exposed us to cheap labor competition
in the first place?

We didn't HAVE to outsource. We COULD have committed to creating the best educated, highest paid, longest lived, highest standard of living workforce in the world, but no. THEY want cheap, uneducated, at will, desperate workers so they can squeeze the most profit out of the market as possible at the lowest cost.

THAT is the origin of her comment- unmitigated, uncontrolled, fully-revealed GREED.

Aha, I found it. A must-read. Here's an excerpt:

Splitting the Difference
By Nancy Greggs

I think it's time we admitted that we just can't get along anymore - it's time to think about a divorce.

Those of you who are ardent believers in the Bush regime can take one-half of the nation (hereinafter called Bushistan); those of us who still believe in old fashioned notions like the Constitution and the Bill of Rights will take the other half, known as the Good Ol' USA.

edit: Even worse, she assumes that all of the unborn would be poor working class people. I suppose she thinks that no one in the middle or upper classes ever have abortions?

They are far more psycho than I had previously thought. I toyed with the idea of mentioning to Mr. Rubyduby that we should move to bring up the little one in a sane state, but now I think I will discuss it with him.

And they call us "loony"????? All you ever hear about is the Loony Left. I really want them referred to as the Psychotic Nutcase Right from now on.

Oh, and the point you make about her assuming that all abortions are from the poor working class. The poor working class of Georgia can't afford them. Only the middle and upper classes (such as they are). The poor continue to have the babies that usually end up on welfare, thereby creating all those "Welfare Queens" we hear them bitch about so much.

Their complete and utter ignorance scares the living hell out of me.

ps. Tell Mr. CB I said hi :hi:

72. They can't afford to have an abortion...
but they can afford the cost of raising a human being for twenty years?

I'm sorry, but I don't get that. I would think that the costs of nine months of pregnancy alone would be much higher than the expense of terminating. And that's just the financial price.

State Senate Chamber in The Capitol of Georgia, on March 24, 2004.
http://www.priestsforlife.org/euthanasia/05-03-24senatorschaefer.htm

'...I believe the element that called for the head of John the Baptist was the same element that crucified Jesus Christ.

Would the authorities in Herod’s Day call for the head of Barabbas? Of course not.

Would the authorities today call for the starvation of a person on death row? Certainly not.

What is being done to Terri Schiavo would never be done to an animal....'

155. US Graduation Rates
Civic Report
No. 31 November 2002
Public School Graduation Rates in the United States

The report’s main findings are the following:

The national graduation rate for the public school class of 2000 was 69%.
White students: 76%
Asian: 79%
African-American: 55%;
Hispanic: 53%
Native Americans: 57%.

Florida’s public schools had the lowest overall graduation rate in the nation with 55% of students graduating, followed by Georgia, the District of Columbia, and Arizona.

New Jersey had the highest overall graduation rate with 87%, followed by North Dakota, Utah, and Iowa.

Wisconsin had the lowest graduation rate among African-American public school students with 41%, followed by Florida, Oregon, and Tennessee. The highest rate of graduation among African-American students was 74% in West Virginia, followed by Arkansas, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

Mississippi had the lowest graduation rate among Hispanic public school students with 23%, followed by New York, Oregon, and Florida. The highest rate of graduation among Hispanic students was 73% in Louisiana, followed by Wyoming, Hawaii, and Virginia.

Nebraska had the lowest graduation rate among Native American public school students with 40%, followed by Minnesota, Nevada, and Oregon. The highest rate of graduation among Native American students was 86% in Alabama, followed by Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Graduation rates for African-American, Hispanic, and Native American public school students were particularly low in a number of states; for each group there were six different states with graduation rates below 50%.

Rhode Island had the lowest graduation rate among Asian public school students with 66%, followed by Tennessee, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. The highest rate of graduation among Asian students was 95% in Illinois, followed by Missouri, Oklahoma, and Maryland.

Florida had the lowest graduation rate among white public school students with 60%, followed by Tennessee, Georgia, and Alaska. The highest rate of graduation among white students was 89% in North Dakota, followed by South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) finds a national high school completion rate of 86.5% for the class of 2000. The discrepancy between the NCES’ finding and this report’s finding of a 69% rate is largely caused by NCES’ counting recipients of General Educational Development (GED) certificates and other alternate credentials as high school graduates, and by its reliance on a methodology that is likely to undercount dropouts.

From her bio: "Nancy is the President and Founder of Family Concerns, Inc."

Woo-hoo! "Family" and "Concerns"--two fundie codewords in one organization! Dang, she's Xian-squared!

"She was Founder and President of the Family Concerns Pregnancy Center (1988-1998), which met the needs of over 5000 girls and women in the Atlanta area"

"met the needs of"... Uh-huh. Try "restricted the choices of" instead.

The "Pregnancy Center" probably ended when the Georgia Legislature stopped them from listing their brainwashing centers under "Abortion Services" in the Yellow Pages (yes, they really did used to do that, before they were stopped).

87. Welcome to the new Republican Rural Georgia
This is the kind of people we're having to deal with down here...and the saddest thing of all that despite these kinds of statements their constituents not only agree with them, they're proud of it. Witness the fact that this story rated no more than the sixth item in a column - with no indication of embarrassment or criticism from the columnists.

With a rural, repig peckerwood for a governor we're now bragging about landing a KIA plant - BMW goes to South Carolina and Mercedes to Alabama and we get KIA - and what's even more embarrassing we gave them $400 million in taxes breaks, etc., for 4000 jobs, most of which will be people living in Alabama - Georgia pays for it and Alabama gets most of the bennies - we've already given away the tax revenue to get it, remember. And even more telling, less than half that number of incentives to GM and Ford would have kept Atlanta assembly plants operating - they're now scheduled to close - but you see those jobs are in Atlanta and this Governor don't do shit for Atlantans, just his peckerwood constituents. The only reason he bothered to even try to get the state to support Atlanta's bid for the NASCAR museum was, you guessed it, his peckerwood constituents would have to drive through his part of the state to get to it. You do know who NASCAR fans are don't you? Overweight, tattooed, tobacco chewing, beer swillers, and their husbands.

88. She's a racist, too. In 1992, she ran for Mayor as the "white" candidate
I came home one evening to find a message from her campaign asking all the white voters to vote for her since there were three black candidates to split the black vote, this was Atlanta's first opportunity to have a white mayor since the sixties. I kid you not.

I thought about calling local radio stations to play it on the air until she publicly said something similar during the debates and saved me the trouble. Someone should try to find a transcript of the debates from the 1992 Atlanta Mayoral race where she talks about the needs of the "white voters in North Atlanta".

What an embarrassment.

111. An obvious nutcase, but it brings up an interesting point
During the great Plagues of the Middle Ages, so many people died, that labor on the lord's estates became harder and harder to find.

Suddenly, the surviving peasants realized that they were in demand. They could ask for more money and even have a choice of who they worked for and where they got to work. And they found their pay more lucrative, too.

A lot of historical sociologists point to this time as the decline of the feudal system and the empowering of the common man. Almost overnight, there was a new stratum of social order - the middle class. Skilled, mobile workers who demanded a price - and got it. A radical shift in the power structure.

Now, the upper class realizes the value in keeping birth rates high - more labor and cheaper labor.
That's why they never object too loudly about illegal immigration - cheap labor is coming to them.

It's an attempt to bring back the good old days of serfdom and servitude.

I believe I first read this in a history of organized labor, because some historians see this period as the beginning or forerunner of the labor movement. I'm not sure if the guilds predate the Plague or not, but there is no question that the supply and demand factors of the period worked in favor of higher wages and as you said, an empowering of the common man.

I read the OP and liked it very much. It was an entertaining refresher course on what "mercantilism" was all about, and clarified certain other things, like the fact that "neoliberalism" is actually an economic term, not a political one. I always found it confusing that neoconservatism is also called neoliberalism. I'm looking forward to reading the sequels!

154. I watched a special about the Black Death on the History Channel
awhile back. It was quite interesting, I had no idea for instance that Jews were blamed for brining the plague etc and were hunted down etc.

One of the points they mentioned though as you said was when it was all over so many people had died that it gave rise to a middle class. Farmers took over the neighbors idle fields because all of the neighbors had died and were able to actually sell crops rather then just live off them. It was really interesting how it shook up the power base.

More cops may be hard to come by in the short term, but they can always find an excuse to declare martial law or even use Blackwater goons--wasn't BushCo proposing something like that for some hard-hit parish in New Orleans? I believe it was St. Bernard parish but I really don't remember. There was a thread about it on GD a day or so ago.

As for more jails, they're building them as fast as they can, and there are also those gulags--excuse me, detention centers--I keep hearing about on DU. I mean, you wanna talk about cheap labor...

It's an arrogant elitest attitude that treats people like cattle (or sheep, take your pick). That poor single women are put on this earth to STAY POOR and to MAKE BABIES so that the rich can PROFIT off of their CHEAP LABOR BABIES.

This statement is still fresh. Trust me, there are a lot of ways to use this comment that would alienate poor people from the Republican party.

Really this statement isn't about abortion - it's about elitism and exploitation. It's an admission of an underlying Republican AGENDA to keep poor people poor in this country so that they can be exploited by Republicans for their CHEAP LABOR.

Developing...

is better than slaves. They have to feed slaves and give them a home. They have a certain interest in their health in order to keep them working while they are young and still strong. With cheap labor, you pay them low wages, and they are responsible for finding their own food, housing, and health care. It costs them no more in the long run and relieves them of any responsibility.

Legalized abortion is one of the causal factors in the reduction of crime. Legalizing abortion benefited the poor and socially disenfranchised in far greater proportion to the middle and upper classes. The very people who would most likely repeat the cycle of poverty and be forced to accept crap paying jobs to barely survive.

So yes, many of those fetus' would have grown up to be either unskilled laborers or criminals.

Her conclusion however is repugnant and I interpret it exactly the way you do. She is a heartless monster.

188. A racist and insensitive comment all wrapped up in one.
Really, if anyone remembers some of the threads in which I have been involved concerning immigration, I have always said that cheap labor conservatives are the ones to attack; not the poor immigrant who, for the most part, is coming because jobs are available. Now, this idiot not only confirms what I have said about repukes wanting cheap labor, she states it in such an insensitive manner, that it is beyond belief.

189. Let's Review , Shall We ?
If abortions create a lack of cheap labor (because the premise is that minorities make up the majority of those that get abortions/work at lesser paying jobs) ; then white people should get more abortions strictly because it's painfully obvious that the existence of too many caucasians results in a lack of brain cells properly distributed equally amongst everyone (Sen. Nancy Schaefer being the most glaring example of that)

190. Is there even a word for people who hate babies?
I was going to say she's a misogynist and a (baby-hater) but I think we need a new word for this one.

And I thought it was bad when the anti-choice assholes said babies were a punishment for having sex. Now they're nothing but future drones.

Is it so hard to understand that babies are people- an end in themselves, not a means to an end? They're not a punishment, not a "consequence", they're not a resource. They're people dammit.

192. Believe it or not, I just heard this idea repeated...
On the program "To the Contrary". The Asian woman panel member said much the same thing. The other women on the program, to their credit, looked like they'd never heard anything so stupid and responded pointedly.
