Judy Miller: The "Slanderous" Bloggers Destroyed me
Judith Miller's New Excuse
The former Times reporter tells Vanity Fair the "slanderous" bloggers destroyed her.
By Jack Shafer
Posted Thursday, March 16, 2006, at 8:11 PM ET

Judith Miller

Judith Miller has a new alibi—the blogs done her in!

Writer Marie Brenner presents Miller's latest defense in an April Vanity Fair feature story about the fallout from the Valerie Plame investigation. Brenner, acknowledging she's a friend of the former New York Times reporter, writes that while still in Iraq in May 2003, Miller became a "major target in the intense public anger directed at Bush's war, owing to her reports that Saddam Hussein was producing weapons of mass destruction."

The ones tossing the fire were those dastardly—but unnamed—bloggers, according to Miller. Upon returning to New York later in May, Miller met with the Times' two top editors, Howell Raines and Gerald Boyd, who were then battling a staff revolt triggered by the Jayson Blair scandal. They acknowledged the "flak" her stories had gotten and told her foreign editor Roger Cohen did not want her to go back to Iraq. Cohen opposed her return because, as he tells Brenner, "There were concerns about her sources and her sourcing." Still, Miller managed a quick trip to Iraq.

..............

Miller describes to Vanity Fair the process by which the Pajama People destroyed her:

The bloggers were without editing, without a way for people to understand what was good, what was well reported—to distinguish between the straight and the slanderous. Things would get instantly picked up, magnified, and volumized.

Along some line like: "People aware enough to see I was a lying shill for the administration's war propaganda, and damn vocal about it at their key-boards, brought me down."

But this one really is not capable of a truthful utterance....

There were many more newspapers in those days, and some of them were not afraid to print the truth. With fewer media outlets, owned by an ever-smaller group of corporations, the Official Story gets little opposition.

Except from the Bloggers.

Thank you Mr. Gorbachev for hastening the collapse of the Soviet empire so we in the western Left could move out of its shadow of suspicion.

I guess we'll have to thank Mr. Bush for hastening the collapse of the American Empire so that the neocons and the Leninist Far-Right could similarly be moved off the stage. It's better the FBI searches Ms. Miller's desk than mine -- they found evidence of real treason in hers.

The Cold War covered a lot of crimes. They can't hide there anymore.

in completely absolving herself of her ethical duty and journalistic responsibility. Being a self-righteous media whore with such disdain for the truth, the American public, the Constitution is hard work. She has spent the last few months weaving a confectionary web of lies to try and justify her "journalistic" lack of ethics and truth telling. A blogger didn't tell her to lie and obstruct justice. Miller chose to go to jail and now she finds it is all for naught. Bloggers are much more reputatble than she will ever be. Miller realizes bloggers are here to stay while she has retired with the fruits of her lying labor. Good Grief Mata Hari Miller, being transparent lends credibility. Whoring for access only got Judy chapped lips and an orange jumpsuit.

Miller coated the path with lies to make it easier for this Bush culture of corruption to go to war for non-existend WMD's. Bloggers didn't author the lies that killed thousands upon thousands of innocents. Miller has to live with that as does her former complicit employer The New York Times.

47. She's like fifteen years too late.
As much as I hate to admit it, the conservatives beat us to the internet. If Judy has any questions about the destructive powers of blogs, she should check the unfiltered chain reaction that took place in the 90s when Drudge would post half truths or blatant lies and it would run like a prairie fire to Lucianne, townhall.com, and others. By 5pm that same day, FoxNews would be airing the rumor as if it was truth.

Wish we had that kind of power. At least when you compare the conservative blogs with the liberal blogs, you'll note that the liberals blogs at least make an effort to be fair by forcing everyone to post links.

35. WTF??? !
The bloggers were without editing, without a way for people to understand what was good, what was well reported—to distinguish between the straight and the slanderous. Things would get instantly picked up, magnified, and volumized.

<Church lady voice>
Well, then then perhaps we should examine some well reported articles, shall we? Hmmm??
</Church>

I happen to have an outline of some of them. From the Judy section of my Plame file:

8: NYT
8.1: Miller
8.1.1: WMD Articals:
http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1984429

Jun, 2004:
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:
During the winter of 2001 and throughout 2002, Miller produced a
series of stunning stories about Saddam Hussein’s ambition and
capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction, based largely on
information provided by Chalabi and his allies almost all of which
have turned out to be stunningly inaccurate.

-also-

Her Iraq coverage didn’t just depend on Chalabi. It also relied
heavily on his patrons in the Pentagon. Some of these sources, like
Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz, would occasionally talk to her on
the record. She relied especially heavily on the Office of Special
Plans, an intelligence unit established beneath Undersecretary of
Defense Douglas Feith. The office was charged with uncovering evidence
of Al Qaeda links to Saddam Hussein that the CIA might have missed. In
particular, Miller is said to have depended on a controversial neocon
in Feith’s office named Michael Maloof. At one point, in December
2001, Maloof’s security clearance was revoked. In April, Risen
reported in the Times, Several intelligence professionals say he
came under scrutiny because of suspicions that he had leaked
classified information in the past to the news media, a charge that
Mr. Maloof denies. While Miller might not have intended to march
in lockstep with these hawks, she was caught up in an almost
irresistible cycle. Because she kept printing the neocon party line,
the neocons kept coming to her with huge stories and great quotes,
constantly expanding her access.

8.1.1.1: On Dec. 3, 2002, Miller aired in the Times the allegations
of an "unnamed informant" who said that a deceased Russian scientist
("Madam Smallpox") might have given Iraq a virulent strain of
smallpox. Nine months later, Dafna Linzer of the Associated Press
authoritatively reported: "U.S. Weapons Hunters Find No Evidence Iraq
Had Smallpox" (Sept. 18).

8.1.1.2: April 21 "baseball cap" story - unidentified source wearing
cap discloses WMD processing locations - pegged bogon detector.

8.1.1.3: And, most memorably, she co-wrote a piece in which
administration officials suggested that Iraq had attempted to
import aluminum tubes for nuclear weapons. Vice-President Dick
Cheney trumpeted the story on Meet the Press, closing the
circle.
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:

8.1.1.4: One incident that still rankles happened last April, when
Miller co-bylined a story with Douglas Jehl on the WMD search
that included a quote from Amy Smithson, an analyst formerly at
the Henry L. Stimson Center. A day after it appeared, the Times
learned that the quote was deeply problematic. To begin with, it
had been supplied to Miller in an e-mail that began, Briefly
and on background a condition that Miller had flatly
broken by naming her source. Miller committed a further offense
by paraphrasing the quote and distorting Smithson’s
analysis. One person who viewed the e-mail says that it
attributed views to Smithson that she clearly didn’t hold. An
embarrassing correction ensued. And while the offense had been
entirely Miller’s, there was nothing in the correction
indicating Jehl’s innocence.
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:

8.1.2: (4.4.1.1) Mobile Exploitation Team Alpha (META)

8.1.2.1: "General Judith Miller" -- as Shafer has dubbed her -- was
accused by a half dozen officers of intimidating soldiers
searching for WMD. An Army officer told Kurtz: "Judith was always
issuing threats of either going to The New York Times or to the
Secretary of Defense." Another charged: "She ended up almost
hijacking the mission" of the Mobile Exploitation Team Alpha
(META), which was charged with examining potential Iraqi weapon
sites after the war.
Her journalistic coup lay, rather, in talking her way into getting
clearance from the Pentagon and being allowed to embed with the
75th. As Drogin told Layton, "she was in a great position to get
the initial confirmation in the field" when WMD were found. But
they were not found, despite her best efforts to make readers
think that they were or were about to be.

8.1.2.2: Eugene Pomeroy, public-affairs officer for MET Alpha
According to Pomeroy, as well as an editor at the Times,
Miller had helped negotiate her own embedding agreement with the
Pentagon an agreement so sensitive that, according to one Times
editor, Rumsfeld himself signed off on it.
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:

8.1.3: Pals with Chalabi (7.1)
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:

8.1.4: Pals with King Hussein
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:
As a correspondent for The Progressive and National Public Radio, she
turned her academic interest into a professional one, traveling to the
region and cultivating a network of highly placed sources. Nina
Totenberg, a colleague from NPR, recalls a party in the mid-seventies
at which Jordan’s King Hussein caught a glimpse of Miller across the
room and howled, Juuuuddddy!

Kiiiinnnggg, she responded.

8.1.5: Pals with:
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/features/9226/index.html -:
Miller had ready access to many Mideast potentates. As she shuttled
between meetings with Hussein, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, and
Palestinian Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat in 1984, her
colleagues joked about the Miller Plan for peace.
and
From her first day at the Times, Miller’s life and work have been hard
to separate, which for a reporter is both a strength and a
weakness. She’s a passionate person she gets caught up in her
sources passionately, one of her Times colleagues told me. Friends
from her earliest days in Washington noted that she didn’t surround
herself with people her own age. She sought out the best and brightest
at the city’s highest levels, dating Larry Sterne, the Washington
Post’s foreign editor, and hanging out with the defense gurus Richard
Perle and Walter Slocum. These people were powerful. But they were
also interesting, and Judy liked talking to them. She is curious and
enthusiastic, says one friend from this period.

8.1.6: Jeffery Goldberg
Remember, everyone was obsessed with the White House sex story, says
New Yorker writer Jeffrey Goldberg, who was invited by the paper to
join Miller in an investigation unit to examine Al Qaeda. Goldberg
found her an impossibly difficult colleague. But he also realized her
value. She happened to be prescient about the rise of the global
jihad. And it was her unpleasant hyper-aggressiveness that enabled her
to help force a very important story the possibility of a marriage
between WMD proliferators and global jihadists closer to the top of
the agenda.

My oh my! that girl sure do get around!

That's the difference between liberals and conservatives. Liberals will have instant sympathy for the man who steals a loaf of bread; but Republicans have instant empathy for the man who steals our retirement funds, our public resources and puts our children in danger's way "for the good of the country."

You committed treason against your country, and now you look for consolation? I am only too proud that I, as a "blogger", could have had any hand in your demise. Thank you for the credit, but I must be honest with myself and others, something you obviously are too weak or meek to handle, by saying I cannot claim such credit. You Ma'am, did this to yourself...because you are sick and perverted by your own greed.

Enjoy being publicly ostracized and ridiculed, because you deserve it all. The Truth Shall Set You Free...

76. Public figure...true...absence of malice...
...OK, I'll give you malice. Fact is, Judy didn't do anything 'wrong' - given her, and her co-conspirators' purpose - they got exactly what they wanted...the country and Congress gave bushco the go ahead to engage in this fuckin' disaster that is Iraq. But just to be sure, I looked up 'slander'...first it has to do with 'utterance of false statements or misrepresenting the facts'. This then, from us 'bloggers' can't be 'slanderous' for a couple of reasons. First, since it was written and not 'uttered or voiced', and second, since everything that's been said - with the possible exception of she 'porked a pony in mes-o-po-tamia' - is absolutely true. Now if she had said 'libelous' she would have at least been in the right context...but then she'd still have to deal with that truth thingy.

Maybe what she meant to say is that the bloggers use ugly language in their denunciations of her - then again some of us think that 20 thousand dead and maimed GIs along with untold numbers of Iraqis, pretty-much trumps calling her a fucking whore.

95. Causes for glee: Miller going nuts, and the Times losing money!
Miller's delusional muttering aside, she's partly right of course: alternatives to the MSM did do her in. And thank heavens for that!

Had it not been for the Net--and I mean not only bloggers, whose influence is overrated, but the millions of soapboxes and home forensic labs that are email, web sites, chat rooms and message boards like this one--we might still be fed Miller's PR work for Bushism and the Pentagon.

Instead, the genie is out of the bottle: truth, or at least the search for truths, has become far more popularly decentralized than it was twenty years ago. Newsroom layoffs prove it. Barring interventions by fascism (always possible), a large part of society isn't going back to the old hierarchical order of receiving "news" from on high, and a new generation is using the Net to sift through and produce their own competing narratives.

We can easily see why this trend so troubles elites, who traditionally have depended on the media to manufacture consent for their projects. From Washington down to high-priced shoe-polishers like Miller, a backlash is brewing. But for now, let us savor a small victory in one battle, at least. Miller is reduced to hysterics, and that's a start. ;-)

97. The ability of bloggers to FACT CHECK is what "did her in"
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 05:25 PM by SoCalDem
Her own words and deeds are "whut dun her in".. Bloggers have the time and dedication to dig for morsels, and then lay them all out there for everyone else to see... Judy got used to playing fast and loose, with the satisfaction that once published, read, and then discarded in the recycle bins, her words were ephemeral.. She thought she had the ability to just vamp and write whatever she thought at the moment, and the past would not return to haunt her.. She also thought everyone liked her

She was wrong...on both counts

102. Oh my GOD she's describing herself, the bitch!!!

Here's what Judith Miller says in the article about bloggers, but I think it sounds EXACTLY like what she did in the NY Times and is guilty of!!!!!!
___________________________

"Miller describes to Vanity Fair the process by which the Pajama People destroyed her:

The bloggers were WITHOUT EDITING, WITHOUT A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOOD, WHAT WAS WELL REPORTED - TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE STRAIGHT AND THE SLANDEROUS. Things would get instantly picked up, MAGNIFIED, AND VOLUMIZED".

_________________________________________________________________________

If that doesn't sound like the crap she's guilty of having written and published in the NY Times, then I'm George Bush!!
