1. But aren't those Christian symbols?
You know, the day the bunnies came forth from the tomb to hide eggs for the good little children of Jerusalem?

4. Actually,
eggs and rabbits are ancient fertility symbols, and, if memory serves, the very name for the holiday comes from a Goddess.....

7. Ostara
Ostara -- in some circles referred to as Eostre -- is one of the eight major holidays in the wheel of the year. The holiday is a celebration of spring and growth, the renewal of life that appears on the earth after the winter. Eggs are one of the symbols of new life, growth and fertility.

5. Defintely not Christian symbols...
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 08:06 AM by mcscajun
like many other "traditional" symbols used by Christianity, the Easter Egg has its roots in paganism.

...the ancient rites celebrating the Spring Equinox are most obviously associated with the mysterious Druids and places like Stone Henge, but most ancient races around the world had similar spring festivals to celebrate the rebirth of the year. The Egg, as a symbol of fertility and re-birth, has been associated with these rites from the earliest times.

The Saxon spring festival of Eostre, was named for their goddess of dawn, and when they came to Britain in about the 5th century AD, the festival came with them along with re-birth and fertility rituals involving eggs, chicks and rabbits. When the Saxons converted to Christianity and started to celebrate the death and the resurrection of Christ, it coincided with Eostre, so that's what the early church called the celebration, Eostre or Easter in modern English.

8. What we now call "Easter eggs" are an ancient pagan symbol for
the annual rebirth of earth (spring) which the early Christians ripped-off. The word "Easter," itself, comes from that of the pagan goddess Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of fertility.

9. I think flags on fourth of July would be cool
yes INDEED. I'm sickened by the way the GOP has tried to claim all rights to the flag and besides, I think a slew of flags all over DU would look cool! :D
