Mainline press isn't "waking up" because they've been complicitous all along, are currently, and will continue to be so because they "report" as their corporate pay masters demand they do, period.

However, even in totalitarian states, public pressure can make small differences. The Establishment realizes that the country may only be a short time away from mass public uprisings, so it completely makes sense, behooves the power structure, to "lighten up" a bit in its overall tone and message - the sales pitch - in being so obviously slanted in full support of empire and war profiteering.
