Vietnam war deserter arrested 38 years on
A man was being held in a US military prison yesterday for deserting from the marines 38 years ago after being caught on the American-Canadian border amid a new drive to track down Vietnam-era deserters.

*snip*

Mr Abney is not the only ex-marine to have been tracked down for desertion recently. Since he took over the marine corps Absentee Collection Centre in 2004, chief warrant officer James Averhart has reopened cold cases and claims to have tracked down 33 deserters. "I have a different leadership style than the guys who have had this job. My job is to catch deserters. And that's what I do," he told Florida's St Petersburg Times.

*snip*

Legal observers said the new drive to hunt down Vietnam deserters is designed as a deterrent for soldiers being sent to Iraq. "They're really hardcore about this," Ms Abney said. "I think there have been a lot of these young guys now trying to get refuge in Canada, and they decided they were going to set an example."

assholes like this "coldcase" guy hunting down men in their 60's. Hire a teacher somewhere. It would do the country a whole lot better than this politically motivated, vindicative, punitive, waste of money.

2. Is the crackdown for military justice or to find more bodies for Iraq?

4. What happens after they are caught?
I can almost imagine them being sentenced to serve out the remaining time on their involuntary servitude -- excuse me, draft requirement -- at dirty-but-necessary jobs in order to free up more IED fodder -- excuse me, able bodied servicemen and -women -- to serve in Iraq.

But then, I've grown quite cynical in the last few years.

5. I have a tip for Averhart about where he can find another deserter
try 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Does anyone remember the Boondocks episode when Huey was trying to call the FBI and give them Reagan's name as a terrorist because he'd sold arms to Iraq? I think we should get this Averhart's phone or email and start notifying him about Bush.

9. That sounds about par for the course
The deterrent policy is right up the old "discipline" alley. Ya beat a few, and the rest fall in line.

Gotta love the way the Warrant takes credit for the increase in busts!! If DOD didn't issue that policy directive, his 'snag' rate would be about the same as his predecessors, and he'd be working short days and warming a bar stool by the time most nine-to-fivers were clearing their desks in preparation for the commute home!!

10. Saw that story on Canadian TV last week.
Was so sad to see the (adult)daughter crying, pleading for Cdn government to do something. Her dad is sick and at the time of the interview she did not know where he was detained.

I was revolted to see what the American government is doing to it's former citizen.

12. Oh, crap! This is unfrigging-believable! That poor man. He must be
approaching 60 years old. And he wouldn't go help slaughter upwards of TWO MILLION VIETNAMESE AND SOUTHEAST ASIANS FOR NOTHING!

Somebody here the other day was upset because the 2004 election was "about Vietnam"--which he/she considered a side issue. No way. It WAS and IS the issue: the fascists overcoming "the Vietnam syndrome"--that is, Americans' reluctance to kill other people for nothing--no injury to us, no offense, no attack--if our Corporate Rulers want something, like their oil, or profiteering in armaments and military contracts. They had to BREAK the country of its tendency toward peacefulness, after Vietnam.

Well, they haven't succeeded. More people oppose Bush's horrible war now (80%) than before the invasion (58%)--and way more than opposed Vietnam (which got up to about 70%, I think).

That 58% pre-invasion number--against the Iraq war--tells you about "the Vietnam syndrome." I'm sure most of that 58% were thinking the same thing: never again! And soon others awakened--and now nearly the whole country is opposed, and we don't even have a Draft yet. (My guess: that's one of the reasons why they're going to Diebold Hillary into the WH in '08--Bush can't get a Draft, with his 30% approval rating.)

So they're taking it out on deserters from ALMOST FORTY YEARS AGO! By God, they are going to make us into unjust killers or else!

This is so-o--o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o sick! Our country is so-o--o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o sick! This is a fascist junta--a coup. This is not us. This not who we are.
