Everyone try to watch "The Book of Daniel" tonight on NBC
This series has already got the religious right's blood pressure up. Some network affiliates in the south have already refused to show it due to local pressure from the local communities and churches and threats of boycotts.
Even if you don't watch it, turn your TV on the channel and make the networks think you did.

1. I think that only matters if you are an Nielsen family (otherwise
whether or not anyone knows what you are watching, it doesn't matter)

2. I always wondered about that. How hard can it be to know what
we're watching with digital cable?

11. If you don't use a cable box, the company can't monitor your viewing.
They cannot "ping" a television set. They can ping a "box".

If your cable is pirated, you can't get "pay-per-view" shows or special channels like HBO and Showtime. But the company can't tell you're watching.

For a while I pirated cable, but ended up watching only c-span. So, I figured I could get a cable modem and stream c-span and to hell with the rest of the slime that horrible tube peddles.

3. Oh trust me....
on cable and satellite, they do know what you watch based on the junk mail my wife and I get.
That or it's the NSA :scared:

19. Actually, if you're on satellite or digital cable, you DO count...
... because DISH, Time Warner and Comcast report "raw box scores" to the networks and cable outlets. They're a LOT more accurate than Nielsens, and if it's a residence, there;s a higher probability that eyeballs are actually watching.

15. Neither do I
Got enough of religion in 12 years of catholic school. But I heard numerous ads for this show on local radio today. The gist was, "Hello, New York. WE are not blocking this."

My curiosity is peaked, but still not enough to watch.

16. Unfortunately, Tom Shales of the Washington Post, a critic who is usually
right on, IMO, gives it a pan:

I cannot recall a series in which a greater number of characters seemed so desperately detestable -- a series with a larger population of loathsome dolts. There ought to be a worse punishment than cancellation for a show that tries this hard to be offensive and, even at that crass task, manages to fail.

At least two NBC affiliates have decided not to air "Book of Daniel" (premiering at 9 tonight on Channel 4 here) on the grounds that it's objectionable, and whenever local stations do that, the banned show becomes automatically sympathetic and inviting. That would seem truer than ever in this age of the Patriot Act and a Federal Communications Commission running amok with fines and other penalties for using naughty words and showing naughty pictures.

But "Book of Daniel" just barely merits First Amendment protection, flaunting its edginess with such wince-inducing contrivances as a teenage daughter who stuffs her teddy bears with pot, a grandma with Alzheimer's who interrupts Sunday dinner to complain that her husband is "always showing me his penis," a wife whose lesbian affair with her husband's secretary started when the husband insisted both women join him in a threesome, and an Episcopal priest who pops Vicodins like Tic-Tacs and regularly converses with the living image of Jesus Christ.

Actually, they don't so much converse as swap jokes, with Jesus being a pushover for a bad gag and much too cool a guy to be judgmental about the deplorable pack of crackpots who make up the priest's family and friends. The priest is Daniel -- Daniel Webster, by pointless coincidence -- a man who seems to be failing spectacularly as "father" at home and at the church where he presides. Incompetence is supposed to make him lovable and vulnerable; in fact, if it weren't for the fact that he's played by the sly and admirable Aidan Quinn, he would be simply insufferable.

But I have the TiVo set for it — I'll give it a try.

Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 07:45 PM by qanda
My mother pastors a church and there are many things that can be made light of about the profession without being totally irreverent. I think NBC is "desperate" to outdo the housewives, but the show looks like something I wouldn't let my dog watch.

26. I have my Tivo set.
I intend help the ratings all I can.

No Christianist organization is going to dictate what I may or may not see. I crossed a picket line in Atlanta to see "The Last Temptation of Christ" for the same reason. It turned out to be a pretty impressive work, too.
