Talk about an insult. This was just on the Discovery Channel.

Maybe the George HW Bush garbage scow.

Although the main gun will probably curve to one side.

33. And Carter has a sub, right?
I know they normally name subs after cities, but I think Carter, a nuclear submarine engineer, has a sub named after him.

ahh yes, SSN-23 a Seawolf.

30. Oh, I agree with the sentiment completely
The Navy has lost their minds with naming. The convention means nothing now. There is no really good way to know with certainty what a ship is anymore by name alone.

25. So how did Saint Ronnie of Reagan get a carrier?
Shouldn't he have had an old movie theater named after him instead of an aircraft carrier?

BTW, Carter is also a nuclear physicist. Dubya, in contrast, couldn't even get accepted into law school.

28. One small correction -- Carter is not a "nuclear physicist."
I went through the same US Navy nuclear program that Carter went through. We learned a lot about nuclear power and how to operate plants safely, but I would never in a million years call myself a nuclear physicist.

Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 12:42 AM by NanceGreggs
Yup, that would be YOU, FightingIrish!

If the USS Bush is anything like his administration, it will steal a slip in the harbour, sink small working vessels and give the insurance proceeds to neighbouring yacht owners, under-fund schools for sailors, replace maritime research projects with search-and-destroy missions for the whale that swallowed Jonah, dump oil within fifty-feet of land and then charge the local beach community with the clean-up expenses, declare pre-emptive pirateering on other boats legal, declare itself 'above' existing international maritime law, throw anchors to those blown overboard by hurricane-force winds, fly a 'Mission Accomplished' banner at all times ...

... and, oh yes, eventually run itself aground.

ON EDIT: OOOOPS! This is what happens when you don't read the original post carefully! Thought this was a discussion about a ship named after the Chimp.

Please disregard the above - hopefully it WON'T be relevant for future use, because an impeached president driven from office in disgrace will not be getting a ship named after him.

21. It was named shortly after Bush the Lesser took office...
Part of the Republican Congress brownnosing the new president.

I have two problems with this...

1. Naming ships after living people... It's not right. They need to have a 10 year dead rule like the U.S. Post Office. Helps keep things in perspective.

2. A one term wonder gets a a carrier? What are they thinking?

22. Poppy the Traitor Man
George Herbert Walker Bush had something to do with the assassination of President Kennedy.

Take a look what Poppy told the FBI he was doing in Dallas on 22 November 1963.

Why didn't Poppy warn the government BEFORE the assassination, instead of an hour afterward?

26. Didn't Bush 41 let his crewman drown when his plane went down?

During WW II? Seems like I remember the story went something like Bush saved his own ass and basically told his buddy the hell with you. It was a whole lot different from the JFK PT-109 story anyhow.

If this is true it would be a hell of a reason to name a carrier after a Navy man who let his buddy drown.

27. TWO crewmen.
George HWB was pilot of a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber.

The "Barbara II" was hit by ack-ack while softening up a Japanese held island.

Bush said the cockpit was engulfed in flame. He said he gave the command to abandon ship and he bailed out.

The radioman and gunner never had a chance to bail out. They died when the plane crashed into the sea.

Years later, the gunner in the plane ahead of Poppy's said the guy bailed out before he had to.

36. This is actually fitting
Poppy Bush was our first president who served as a carrier aviator. So what other kind of a ship would you name after him?

I don't like the SOB either, but the USS Poppy Bush will be like the USS Jimmy Carter--a vessel in a type the namesake served on.

When they lay down the USS William Jefferson Clinton, I would like it to be some kind of support ship--a vessel that can carry out its mission in either peace or war, like its namesake.

38. Condi Rice used to have an oil tanker named after her
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/04/05/MN222557.DTL

The White House, already criticized for its connections to Big Oil, now is facing renewed questions over Chevron's decision to name an oil tanker for national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.

The double-hulled giant, Condoleezza Rice, is part of the international tanker fleet of the San Francisco-based multinational oil firm, named several years ago in honor of Rice when she was a Chevron board member and stockholder.

Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 10:53 AM by Sparkman
during it's construction, the big sign was removed and the thing was named...I'll get it.
edit:
There is a federal judge, Lloyd D. George, overturned dozens of times for over-sentencing hispanics for immigragion violations, by the 9th district court. Judge George is a Nevada district Fed. judge, and HE stole the courthouse's name away from Pres. Clinton.

I drove by the sign many times, "William Jefferson Clinton Court House", as the courthouse was being built.

44. Another piece of the rethuglican P.R. campaign....
Name everything you can after YOUR people to keep the "republicans are great leaders lie" going. It's all about the marketing.

Look at Raygun. They are naming everything the can after him. If the rethugs had their way, this country would be similar to communist China where the current regime dictates whose names are celebrated and whose names are purged from public record.
