Cheney to host fundraiser for Thomas Kean Jr. (9/11 Chair's son)

Mr. Cheney will be hosting a fundraiser for Thomas Kean Junior, who is the son of Thomas Kean Sr., who of course was the Chair for the 9-11 Commission.


NJ: Cheney to Headline Kean Fundraiser


After shooting his friend Harry Whittington in a hunting accident, Vice President Dick Cheney was certainly the most ridiculed politician in America last week, lampooned by the late- night talk-show hosts and portrayed as Washington's own Elmer Fudd.

One might think political candidates would try to steer clear of him. But not state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union).

Kean, who is hoping to unseat U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) in November, trails the incumbent by 4 to 1 in the early fundraising race and needs all the help he can get. So, despite New Jersey GOP jitters about Democratic protesters showing up in orange hunting jackets, Cheney will headline a fundraiser for Kean on March 20 in Newark.

Cheney helped raise $300,000 for Republican Doug Forrester during last year's race for governor with an appearance in Plainsboro in late July that drew several hundred demonstrators. Five weeks later, Democrat Jon Corzine cited Cheney's visit as part of a strategy to link Forrester with the policies of the Bush administration, which has low approval ratings in New Jersey.

Democrats, meanwhile, are already taking aim at Kean's decision to invite Cheney.

"This gives new meaning to a campaign shooting itself in the foot," quipped Brad Lawrence, a top political consultant for Menendez.

Cheney's poll numbers favorable

Vice President Dick Cheney has emerged as a likable and effective stalwart in the Bush administration with consistently favorable ratings and strong party backing, according to a poll released yesterday by Gallup.

The survey also quells the notion set forth by persistent critics that Mr. Cheney lurks behind the scenes as a kind of White House puppet master and power broker.

"The American people generally like him, Republicans support him, and despite his important role at the White House, he does not outshine his boss publicly," said Gallup's Lydia Saad.

OJ Simpson, Joseph Stalin are more popular than Dick Cheney

The latest CBS News poll found that only 18 percent of the public has a favorable view of Cheney. How bad is a rating of 18 percent?

According to a quick review of polling archives, it arguably makes Cheney:

- Less popular than former football star O.J. Simpson was after his arrest and trial for murdering his estranged wife and her companion. Three in 10, or 29 percent of all Americans had a favorable view of Simpson in an October, 1995 Gallup poll.

- Less popular with Americans than Joseph Stalin is with Russians. In 2003, fully 20 percent said Stalin, blamed for millions of deaths in the former Soviet Union during the 1930s and 1940s, was a "wise and humane" leader. Thirty-one percent also said they wouldn't object if Uncle Joe came back to rule again, according to surveys conducted by Russian pollsters.

- Much less popular than former Vice President Spiro Agnew in his final days in office. Forty-five percent approved of the job that Agnew was doing as President Richard Nixon's veep in a Gallup Poll conducted in August 1973, little more than a month before Agnew resigned and pleaded no contest to a criminal tax evasion charge arising from a bribery investigation.
