1. I think the word is "gadfly."
Meaning, an annoying person; pest.

2. Gagfly or Gadfly?
Just wonderin'. A gadfly can be a good thing sometimes, where journalists are concerned. That usually means they are pesky and determined.

5. That's a reference to Socrates
Socrates referred to himself as a gadfly in Apology, meaning he went around "biting" people to keep them honest or in touch with reality. A metaphor for calling people on bullshit.

12. For sake of accuracy
it should be noted that she said the administration considers Helen to be a gadfly. That little detail certainly changes the intent of the comment. There is no good reason to misrepresent what she said.

Noron implied that the very question (and by extension, Helen) should call the press's credibility into question-

snip>
Noron O’Donnell said afterward on MSNBC that the question seemed to “energize” the President and call the press’s credibility into question. Guess Karl wanted to play down any suggestion that Mr. Pissy lost his temper and tried to lecture Helen like she was a child, since that would be rude conduct by the President from the podium and all. Too bad there’s video and that clip is likely to be played a lot today. I’m just saying.

13. I just emailed MSNBC, telling them to fire O'Donnell.
feedback@msnbc.com

It has becoming increasingly evident that your "White House Reporter", Nora O'Donnell is not a reporter at all, but a propagandist for President Bush and his administration. Today, during the news conference, esteemed journalist Helen Thomas asked President Bush a very valid question about why he wants to go to war. It is valid, because by all accounts, he had planned to invade Iraq prior to 9/11, (ie according to ex-Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill, brought it up a the first cabinet meeting).

After the press conference Nora O'Donnell had the audicity to call Ms. Thomas a gadfly. If that isn't propaganda, I don't know what is. Do you really think you can remain a credible NEWS SOURCE if you have such people representing you? I think not.

Sincerely

16. I silently cheered when she said that! Socrates is one of my all time
historical favorites. He was referred to as a gadfly, and even called himself one. Power can't stand the truth...look at what happens to dissenters, if evil in power is unchecked---the death of the truth tellers. One of the primary reasons behind our system of government, with its checks and balances, is to prevent such tyrannical opposition to truth or dissent.
