Iraq Veterans-- a huge new wave of homeless men

If statistics are any indication, many of our returning vets are going to need lifelong counseling for post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse, and they will need help with housing. We still have a huge hang-over effect from Viet Nam. And the kids who served in Viet Nam did not generally get themselves serially deployed year after year.

Yet another hidden cost to this insane war.

How many homeless veterans are there?

Although accurate numbers are impossible to come by ... no one keeps national records on homeless veterans ... the VA estimates that nearly 200,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. And more than half a million experience homelessness over the course of a year. Conservatively, one out of every three homeless males who is sleeping in a doorway, alley, or box in our cities and rural communities has put on a uniform and served our country ... now they need America to remember them.

Why are veterans homeless?

In addition to the complex set of factors affecting all homelessness … extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income, and access to health care … a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse, compounded by a lack of family and social support networks.

and elsewhere in Freeper-ville. You would think that those guys would have a more giving attitude where veterans are concerned.

"Support the Troops" is an empty slogan for a lot of people. All troops turn into veterans.

I guess it's like fetuses. "Support the Pre-Born" at the expense of everything else. But once the baby actually IS born-- forget it. Yer on yer own--kiddo.

5. And there will be more who will not "fit in" when they get back because

they are sending them back to Iraq on meds now to combat the PTSD.

Even Senator Boxer mentioned it Monday night on Larry King's show.
You should read the transcript for that show - it made me sick the way former Senator Simpson argued with her.
