Bushisms as a classroom tool. My son's 6th grade class has
a list of 20-30 bushisms, and their assignment was to correct the sentences. Unbelievable that someone like * is our POTUS.

5. That is a great idea
Too funny. I'd suggest do all of hid Bushisms, but that may take the rest of the school year.

8. That's what his supporters LOVE about him
That he talks just like a regular ol' redneck like themselves, and you can have a beer with the guy! None of this fancy edjamacation book learnin' stuff.

So sad that there are voters out there that actually want someone like THAT for their president.

9. Hilarious...
and terrifying at the same time, you know? It's a good use of his idiocy, anyway, and that's one natural resource we have PLENTY of... I noticed during the speeches recently that no one even bats an eye when he says "nuke-u-lar" anymore. And I wasn't listening too closely at the time, but I think he said it was OK to give money to faith-based organizations (grrr) as long as they weren't "prosy-le-sizing." Anybody catch that one?

10. Bushisms
The only ones with which I am familiar are :

Is you children getting an education.

The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur - a French word for which there is no translation in any language.

To the President of Brazil - "Do you have coloured people here" ?

The entrepreneur one is a myth, he never said it

Anyway, you want to know how many "Bushisms" there are? At least one for each day of the year!

12. It might help your son to know that
when Bush makes mistakes it means he's lying. He has no problem speaking clearly and concisely about killing people and cutting taxes and making his friends rich.

I remember explaining to a friend of my that when Bush said "I know how hard it is to put food on your family", inadvertently combining "feed your family" and "food on the table" he was simply lying. I convinced my friend that Bush COULDN'T POSSIBLY KNOW if it's hard to feed your family. He was born wealthy. But saying "I know how hard blah blah blah" sounds better than "I've heard stories that it can be hard to feed your family."

17. in that case, just be sure to say, every once in a while ...
"Isn't our wonderful President a clever man, promoting education by giving us all these examples on purpose?"

(Because they seem to lack any understanding of irony, they would actually believe this ...)

15. In addition to waiting for the newest *ism, I try to imagine who
punctuated his speeches (SOTU, etc.) There are pauses at inappropriate spots, as if, while reading from the prompter, he forgets to go the next line. I can imagine the little voice in the ear bud saying "that was good, now do the next line."

Not just for grammar, but for fact-checking in math, history, science, economics, geography -- you name it ...

http://www.dubyaspeak.com

Actually, at the rate he's been churning them out, they wouldn't be able to cover them all!

p.s. a friend of mine teaches English as a Second Language, and she finds Bushisms very useful too.

p.p.s. I was trying to think up a bunch of possible topics for students to choose from for a 3rd-year college forestry course, and ended up using Bush's claim that the cedars at his Crawford place were "stealing water". The students who researched it told me that this was a big oversimplification by him (what a surprise!), and that the techniques he was using to remove them were not likely to help matters much ... also, he would probably be losing more water from that lavish artificial bass pond than from the cedars. I tell you, his quotes are great for all educational levels!
