CNN: Drywall Jesus
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 03:57 PM by blueinindiana

I saw this spot on CNN.com about the ‘Drywall Jesus’ a church had some damage after Katrina or something and the drywall cracked in a way that ‘looks’ like Jesus on the cross or at least that’s what they think it looks like.

I am not bashing religion but doesn’t this sort of ‘crap’ cheapen religion. You hear all these stories about the ‘Virgin Mary’ appearing on everything from windows to toast.

You would think Christians would hold their holiest symbols in higher regard than being seen on a piece of burnt toast or in this case drywall.

5. One of my favorite Woody Allen lines (from Love and Death)
"I was wandering the woods one day, thinking about Christ. If he was a carpenter, I wonder what he charged for bookshelves?"

9. Yeah. well...
this sort of stuff has been going on for ages. Visions of Mary, weeping statues, stigmata...

I'm up in the air about it all, but a lot of it doesn't demean the beliefs, rather it strengthens them by showing that miracles still do occur, even if some do go a bit overboard about it all.

OTOH, drywall, grilled cheese sandwiches, birthmarks and other nonsense is just nuts. Can't wait for Holy Cum Stain to make it to eBay.

14. I remember in at least one case those 'tears' turned out to be bat urine.
Confirmed by tasting -- by a thoroughly idiosyncratic naturalist.

11. Reality is indeed stranger than fiction! My question for all of those
who "see" Jesus, Mary, etc. here and there - since we have no idea what they looked like, then how can they determine that they "see" these people? Just incredible....

13. Well, they have the velvet paintings, silly!
In which Jesus and Mary look thoroughly Western European, for some odd reason.

18. I've always wanted some cultural anthropologist
to figure out what folks looked like in that area in those days, and have a likeness made of that idea.

'course, it'd really piss off Robertson.

Hey, I just remembered -- didn't Time do a cover on this?

(IIRC. Every other Time cover is about Christianity, it's hard to keep them all straight.)

12. It Isn't All Christians Who Subscribe To This Nonsense
this is a particular sect of Christianity, I won't name names, but let's just say they've been around a long time, and there are lots of them in Louisiana

15. If we can have a cardboard Prezydent, they can have a Drywall Jesus.
Jesus & Mary really ought to learn how to write. They'd make themselves much clearer when they want to reveal themselves.

Just saying.

17. I would think that if Jesus wanted to make an appearance...
... he'd appear to help the dying in Darfur or among the starving in Ethiopia, perhaps on the streets of Ramalla or comforting the earthquake victims in the mountains of Pakistan. Hey, he could have appeared in a great big ol' boat in NOLA after Katrina hit.

But noooooo, to these dimwits Jesus would rather appear in a grilled cheese sandwich, a stain on a highway overpass or on a piece of cracked drywall. Well, that drywall's not the only thing that's cracked.

by Katrina -- the only thing left standing was her statue of the Buddha. So, what do the Christian Fundies want to make of that?
