DJ Fired For Calling Condoleezza Rice 'Coon'

ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis radio station quickly fired a talk show host for uttering a racial epithet as he talked about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on his morning show Wednesday.

Dave Lenihan apologized on the air immediately after making what he said was a slip of the tongue. KTRS president and general manager Tim Dorsey agreed the remark was accidental but said it was nonetheless "unacceptable, reprehensible and unforgivable."

Lenihan had been heaping praise on Rice, who has frequently said she aspires to run the NFL one day but has more recently ruled out seeking to replace retiring Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

"She's been chancellor of Stanford," Lenihan said on the air. "She's got the patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."

He said he had meant to say "coup" instead of the racial slur.

it probably was an honest mistake, especially if he had been praising her. Oh well, a talk show host should know better.

I would have suspended him, but not fired him.

I'd have to hear the recording though I suppose to understand the context of what he was saying. Just sounds like a terrible screwup, but fireable? Not so sure. I'd say in that case a suspension and forcing the guy to give a press conference apologizing and explaining what he meant to say. Why destroy him over it? I guess that's radio.

we are becoming a fascist country when mispronouncing something or accidentally saying something wrong, then immediately correcting it is cause for being fired. Looking at the context of what he was saying, it was quite obviously an accidental tongue snap. I don't care about his politics, what happened to being human? We all make blunders, but this guy loses his job for this, while Bush bungles his way through Iraq, getting countless innocent folks killed, and he still has his job. Makes no sense.

Boortz spent part of today's radio show making fun of how a black woman spoke---had an "English" translation of her comments, set her comments to rap music, etc. Fucking racist.....

Those of you making excuses for this guy ought to be ashamed of yourselves. He wasn't some redneck asshole at some honkytonk bar, he was a broadcasting professional on the public airwaves. There's no excuse for this, none whatsoever.

For the apologists, apparently the man thinks that way and it slipped out. It wasn't an accident out of the blue.

Although I do not know Ms. Rice in person, I have been subject to enough disinformation, disrespect and caustic airhead-ism from Ms. Anal Detritis to permit me a a bit of latitude in an observation or two.
I do not condone insults aimed at trivial differences among people such as skin color. I will note, however, the very non trivial fact that she is one of the ugliest women, more inside than out, I have ever had the misfortune to have to evaluate.

Since only r/w boneheads can manage to be wrong one hundred percent of the time, it is not at all surprising that one of their number should dispense profligate praise for all the important ugliness, while harboring powerful distaste for the least offensive elements of her being. SoS.
