The Dixie Chicks are back and they're PISSED
I just caught this on Americablog.com
A great site, and one you should be visiting several times a day.
John does a GREAT job over there.

Hit the CHICKS for free here: http://www.dixiechicks.com and the song will start playing.

Turn up your speakers and check them out.

The deal about these girls is first and foremost...

They are supremely talented musicians.
They are gifted lyricists.
And they are pissed.

Check it out.

It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should.

I can't wait to see the Fundy's heads explode.
These woman are saying "screw you" check this out...

Yes, they do rule.

put my post into the lounge.

Chicks Rule.

I am not a big into Country but any group that can sing like they do,
play their asses off, love Bob Wills, the Grahmn Parsons Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo,"
and give a shout out to Lowell George in their band name are OK by me.

Damn straight I loves me some Dixie Chicks!

12. I always respected how
Natalie Maines, in particular, always stayed strong in her convictions. I remember Toby Keith said some stuff about her having a big mouth and that it was unfortunate for the other two that they had to deal with her bringing all this negative attention to the band. I mean, really, why is it that a woman speaks her mind and it means she has a big mouth and is difficult? She has just as much a right to speak her mind as TK, no matter who agrees with it or not. Furthermore, I always felt TK was pretty expedient in exploiting hyperpatriotism to further his career, the Dixie Chicks took an unpopular stand at the time, which pretty much turned out to be the right thing to do. Anybody can jump on a bandwagon. They didn't and I respect that.

27. The more I think about this song, and the lyrics, this is going to be BIG.
I may be wrong.
What the hell, half the time I don't know what I'm talking about.
But, every once in awhile...

We don't see this anymore.
This is a "fuck you" song.
I grew up in the 60's so I have seen some "fuck you" songs.
Country Joe and the Fish included.

This is a "fuck you" song to the right.
This is a "fuck you" song to our friendly country radio-clear channel- we love Bush-red state- pickup driving nation.
This is a "fuck you" song to Laura Ingraham, who had a book out recently called "Shut up and sing"

Tell me this ain't "fuck you"...

And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

Or my life will be over...

These girls are saying they have been threatened with their lives, and people like Laura Ingraham and Bill O'Reilly, and Joe Scarborough are responsible.

It's a simple song, I will say that.
And that's what so great about it.

The whole song is based on the middle chorus, where they ramp up and mention hate, radicalism, "sleeping like a baby with no regrets" for criticizing the Chimp, and threats on their lives.

And you can sing to it.
Great harmonies.

We know how the media is...

They are going to be all over this, and I got a feeling that this CD is going to FLY off the shelves, and every cable network is going to be SCREAMING about these "disrespectful" Texas girls.
If they flamed out over Steve Earle, they are going to bust an artery over this one.

Country radio is going to HATE this song.
Not the country radio audience mind you, but the country radio industry.
The clear Channel,Toby Kieth loving, Mission Accomplished, put a boot in their ass radio, is going to hate this song.

And good for them.

98. This is something about the rwing brownshirts that I can't understand...
As much as I despise Limpballs, Insannity, Annthrax Annie, Michelle Maulkin, etc. it wouldn't occur to me to send death threats to them. Nor has it ever crossed my mind to steal yard signs, or key a car, or to remove a bumpersticker from someone's vehicle!!!

I caught a guy peeling a "Friends Don't Let Friends Vote Republican" sticker off of my car and when I asked him what the hell he thought he was doing to my private property, he raised his fist like he was gonna hit me. I would've given him the first swing, being a female and all, but I do think that he would've regretted it one way or another.

I was thinking this it the first great anti-war song. For years people have been asking what happend to the songs that pointed a finger at government and said I not going to do it or take it. Well this seems to be that type of song. They stand firm for what they believe. Great song.

36. At the risk of looking like a Chicks' PR person...this is what country is,
IMO. The jingoistic crap of the last 10-even 20 years isn't "true" country, if you ask me. Forgive me, contemporary country fans, but I was born into and was raised on country music, and I think a lot of "old country" is among the most progressive forms of art there is when it comes to labor and "working man" interests more generally.

I can't tell you guys how happy the Dixie Chicks, and this single, makes me. Makes me feel "home again" in all the right ways.

47. Absolutely
I've recently found myself listening to county / western / folk music. The music of Arlo Guthrie, Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, and Johnnie Cash. I'd take these mens' crappiest songs over any of the neo-rock gibberish falling out of the "Beverly Rednecks" like Toby Kieth's mouths.

However, this song - sorry to say - Isn't that great. The message and spirit of it are good, but it has no musical impact or value. It sounds... canned, almost. Just another random blip out of the top 40 sort of... stuff. It also happens to be hte first song by the Dixie Chicks I've ever heard, so I'll reserve judgement on their talent until further notice.

Here's hoping they figure out how to put more of an edge to this song - It's supposed to be "speaking out" and "mad as hell", but it sounds like a ballad, almost.

57. Well, I've been listening to country/western/folk since the 60's...
And I like the Chicks' new song fine. Their records usually ARE highly produced--they aren't singing into a can for some ethnomusicologist.

Did you know that Arlo's father was a singer & songwriter too? His name was Woody Guthrie. Steve Earle wrote this piece about him for The Nation.

For me personally, Woody is my hero of heroes and the only person on earth that I will go to my grave regretting that I never met. When I invoked his name in "Christmas in Washington," I meant it. Clinton was being re-elected in a landslide and I had voted for him and I wasn't sure why and I needed something to hang on to, someone to say something. I needed, well...a hero.

www.thenation.com/doc/20030721/earle

Here's a bit of "Christmas in Washington"--which rings even truer nowadays. (Add Steve Earle to your list, too.)

I followed in your footsteps once
Back in my travelin' days
Somewhere I failed to find your trail
Now I'm stumblin' through the haze
But there's killers on the highway now
And a man can't get around
So I sold my soul for wheels that roll
Now I'm stuck here in this town

Chorus:
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now

Chorus

There's foxes in the hen house
Cows out in the corn
The unions have been busted
Their proud red banners torn
To listen to the radio
You'd think that all was well
But you and me and Cisco know
It's going straight to hell

So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barricades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring

Chorus

40. I think they've always been vibrant and genuine! :)
That's what's ironic about this whole situation. They were the darlings of Nashville and were on a fast track to country music stardom till Natalie joked about Bush. I've always liked their music for it's heart and the harmonies and the musicianship.

As I said in a thread below...

BUY THIS CD. Show the right wingers that their bullshit boycott can't stop free speech and good music.

41. Yeah, I thought they were great and then when Natalie said that
and all the controversy ensued (I didn't think she was joking, actually) I asked for Dixie Chicks music for Christmas, and my brother bought me their live CD. In the performance, Natalie mentioned the importance of voting and said how voting was a great way to express your opinion and that no one knows what you're doing in that voting booth...in the context, it was great, and the crowd cheered her.

Even more reason to love them! I just didn't want people to think they should "only" like the Chicks because of their political "spine," but because they are so talented. I've always thought they were a one of a kind group and very true to the country roots I love while offering a slightly different, more modern sound.

since the christ-yuns have a strangle hold on it....remember songs like "you load 16 tons and whadaya get another day older and deeper in debt"...and the refrain, "i owe my soul to the company store". that and many older country songs could have been written for todays political climate.

seeing the "original group" when they were girls working as street musicians in Dallas' west end. They could really draw a crowd around.

I am wearing out my refresh button listening to this song.

34. Oh, they so rock. True independent Texans.
(Well, Natalie is anyway.) As a native eastern New Mexican and having lived in TX, I can say for sure that this area has STRONG progressive roots...we just gotta reclaim them. As does most of country music. Look at old country: very pro-labor, "working man," and so on. We lost that in the late 70s and 80s somehow, but now is our chance to reclaim that. We never stopped working for these people, but now we have a chance to get them back, to show them that we're on their side (and among them). If we do it right, we can take back the entire country.

39. BUY THIS CD!
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 01:51 AM by XOKCowboy
Even if you don't like country music or the Chicks necessarily. Just buy it to push the sales up and show all the zealots that their boycotts won't work. Support these ladies for the abuse they took for just speaking their minds.

I think this is a great song and I'm going to buy it tomorrow. I've always loved the Chicks anyway.

Edited to keep from dating myself.

43. Entire lyrics...

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I have every CD so far, and love this new song of theirs.

It's coming at the right time too. They were slandered, hated, threatened, and boycotted by the right for saying how they felt. Now that the war is unpopular and the sheeple are waking up, nice time for them to eat crow.

65. I'm mad as hell also
I'm sure as hell not in a forgiving mood, I want vengence on these ignorant cocksuckers that rah rah us into wars and hating. I want their time to be over, over, gone, done.
It's time, time for us, time for all rational thinking people to stand up and tell these knuckle dragging reaction driven cretins to shut the fuck up yourself, your way hasn't worked.
I hope this is just the start of a flood, I want more of this, I want to tell these people you're fucking wrong, you were wrong then and now, we were right in all that we've done.
It's sad that it's taken so long, and so many have died, so much has been lain to waste.
I'm not going to forgive anyone, not for a while anyway.

86. Powerful song with a message
I can see television ads with this song playing, with images of Bush making promises he would later break. Followed by a debt ticker skyrocketing the national debt totals, following by the Iraq war with bombs exploding, people lying dead and bloody, Hurricane Katrina, people floating in the streets of New Orleans while Bush plays the guitar...

At the very end:

STILL MAD AS HELL?
VOTE DEMOCRATIC
And get America back!

Is there any way this CD won't be a big hit!

Do you think we'll start seeing news stories about Country music's new liberal slant? Or will they start saying that DC aren't playing country music anymore? (because it's liberal and Toby Keith won't play it)
