Students from a High School in Gallup, NM protested against the war this week by staging a walkout. This story from the Gallup Independant from 21st March, 2006

Small turnout, strong belief ; GHS students protest leadership,Iraq war

A half-dozen Gallup High School students walked out of classes and across the campus Monday carrying signs protesting U.S. involvement in Iraq and demanding the resignation of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. The students said they were disappointed with the turn out for the protest. They had expected more than 40 students to participate.

Mike Butler, one of the organizers of the protest, said the group had hoped to have more students involved in the protest, but many opted to stay in their classes, possibly because of fear of some kind of punishment by the school district.

Butler and the five others walked out of the school building to the security gate in front of the school to talk about their concerns about the way the war was going and to plead their case that the time has come to end the war and allow the troops to come home.

"We totally support our troops," said Butler, who added that he and the others have been talking about this walkout as a way to show their feelings about the way the war in Iraq is being handled.

Butler and the others said that they planned to continue trying tofind ways to get other students at the school involved in protesting the war.

More meetings are scheduled and the group members said they would continue to strive to bring public awareness to the issues they hoped they raised a least a little with Monday's protest.
