The news in Los Angeles.
I was reading the "highly acclaimed" thread about the Black SUV stolen in L.A. How it was all over FOX. How silly it was.

And somebody mentioned how that is THE news in SOCAL. Everyday...highspeed chase...TV shows interrupted so everybody can see the chase. Just ridiculous what passes for news. And it perpetuates itself. The more it's on TV...the more the Kiddies want to get their OWN highspeed chase on the tele.

And it reminded me of the time I lived in SOCAL. 2000-02. I had a friend that came out from Colorado and lived with me for about 6 months.

His first morning, he turns on the TV. Good Day L.A. was on w/ Jilian Barberie (sp?). He sat awestruck for about a half an hour, mouth open wide.

Finally he turns off the TV, turns to me, and says,"Is this what the news is like in L.A.?"

I tell him, "Yep.".

He responds, "That isn't news. That's a variety show. It's bimbo's showing cleavage. It's Jerry Lewis running around screaming, 'LAAAADDDAAAAYYYY!!!!'. It's a carnival freak show. It's monkey's flinging poo at moronic onlookers.

"This is what passes for news here!?!?!"

"Welcome to the land of LA's, dude."....and we both just cracked up laughing.

1. You are right....constantly airing these chases
glamorize the chases...and perpetuates the chases....when more civilians get killed maybe their families will hold the media responsible for the irresponsible reporting...

2. News is not important in L.A....
good television is what is important in L.A.

And it's spreading across Amerika.

The funniest thing:
His response was almost identical to my response after watching my first "newscast" in L.A.

3. Fox only local morning news in Dallas

Thankfully Fox network doesn't have a morning show for the affiliates, our version of "Good day" isn't quite as wild as the LA version. The other three are all on the national fluff news and on our Fox you can turn it on and know in a shot time you are going to get a local weather and traffic report which unless something has blown up is what I want to know.

4. As an Angeleno, I have to say it's truly appalling.
Worst offender imho is NBC Channel 4 local news. I'm always keeping an eye out for how they cover local developments vis-a-vis Iraq War, peace movement, local casualties and so on. A lot of times, NBC Channel 4 flat-out mis-states the anti-war movement's position. (By that, I mean the local newsanchor will say the anti-war movement believes "such and such" when the clip they just showed shows a spokesperson for the anti-war movement saying something entirely different. Really incredible.

I'm a former print journalist, so retain a passing interest in this.

5. We were in SoCal for a week a few months ago...
holy crap...there is a car chase every ten minutes on TV! After day two or three we made jokes about it. Unbelievable.

Peace.

6. When you call 911 in Los Angeles you are connected to
Entertainment Tonight. They will ask you if your emergency involves a celebrity. If "no" you will be transferred to the LAPD and put on hold for 10 minutes.

Car chases, movie premieres, celebrity news, the weather ("sunny" again).

Why do Los Angeles thermometers have a red-line at 55-degrees?
A: Because in L.A. 55 is "freezing"

8. For what it's worth - Most of our Television "Local News" Coverage sucks.
Violence(if it bleeds, it leads!, car chases, fires, cute animal stories are all the rave in just about every market in this country. Between Local news and Cable News, it's no wonder that so many Americans are uniformed.
