Hispanic walk-out - 12 noon tomorrow
As I work in a HS we have been notified of a planned national hispanic general-strike/walk-out tomorrow, friday 3/24, at noon.

It is supposed to be "under the radar" and effecting the Hispanic Workforce. Apparently the organizers have purposely avoided the media while organizing this event.

Has anyone else heard of this?
GO FOR IT!
America needs to learn how to general strike.

Flavin

1. Right on!
My husband has been saying that since 2000. We need a general strike.

Maybe the Hispanics will teach us how.

4. I haven't heard anything, and I hope they do!
I'm not Hispanic, but I was talking to my hsband about a national strike yesterday. I heard they did that in France the other day to protest some new labor laws. NOBODY went to work! It shut down the whole country! Hubby laughed, and said I only wish we could do something like that in the US, but it will NEVER happen. Too many people are too damn scared of the consequences.

Peaceful Demos all week long...Los Angeles tomorrow...
New York City on Sunday!

WE HAVE TO DEFEAT H.R. 4437 NOW
Come to the March in Upper Manhattan Against H.R. 4437
March 26, 2006
http://www.immigrantsolidarity.org/cgi-bin/datacgi/database.cgi?file=Issues&report=SingleArticle&ArticleID=0483

~snip~

We can and must defeat the anti-immigrant bill H.R.4437.
We must put greater pressure to ensure it. The turnouts
in Chicago, with more than 300 thousand people, and other
samples of pressure, including the lobbying in Washington
of pro-immigrants and defenders of the human rights
groups, have had a tremendous impact in the internal
workings of the Legal Committee of the Senate. Now there
is the possibility that this committee will vote on a Bill
that would open a route for the legalization of millions
of undocumented people. Later, the proposal of the Senate
will have to face the approved bill from the House of
Representatives which is authored by the republicans James
Sensembrenner and Peter King.

The more diverse and strong the pressure is from the
immigrant communities, unions, groups defending civil and
human rights, churches of all the denominations, all sorts
of organizations, etc., the greater possibilities we will
have to defeat this political attack from the most
conservative sector of the United States. By way of
popular peaceful mobilizations we will avoid the
criminalization of almost 2 million undocumented minors
and more than 10 million of adults that are in the same
legal condition. This is how we will defeat this attempt
to brand as traffickers of human beings churches, social
services agencies, family members and any person that
offers aid to an undocumented person. In this way we will
avoid that an undocumented person, who is caught or a
visitor whose visa has expired during their stay in the
country, spend a year in jail.

No to racism, xenophobia and discrimination against
immigrants.

14. here's what we were told
Our principal was contacted by the Superintendent's office and told about the "nation-wide" hispanic walk out to protest the current administration's and republican house/senate's policies on immigration.

We were informed in case any of the 30% approx student population . decided to "disappear" for the afternoon.

The information was passed on that this was "an underground-type event" with no media involvement.

<SHRUG>

I have no links (things still happen without the internet, you know).
I have no MSM reports.
Just passing it on to see if anyone else has heard of it.

19. It sounds important and exciting, but . . .
it has the feel of a social engineering "experiment". I suspect that someone started it just to see how big of a stir they could cause. Even school superintendents could fall for that sort of thing.

In any case, it's no longer underground. Just by posting it, you've effectively spread the word to the multitudes.

Take the half-day off, if you want. Do you think the strikers could use some Anglo support?

20. That was my thinking too. I work with many Hispanics, almost
one-third of the workforce of my employer is Hispanic, and I haven't heard a thing.

My natively bilingual colleague knows of my political leanings (we are practically on the same page) and she would have mentioned it, I'm quite certain.

I'm with them, if it's the case; I've never crossed a picket line, but I gotta say I smell a, well, something.

24. It could be a rumor based on reports of planned protests, e.g.,
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of mounting urgency, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called on its flock to oppose the measure, and tens of thousands of immigrants around the country stepped up a series of protest rallies in anticipation of a Senate vote on competing immigration bills next week.

41. Viva La Huelga! Call to action link in here...
No Human is Illegal!

http://www.immigrantsolidarity.org/

Say NO to racism, xenophobia and discrimination against
immigrants!

It's about time! Politicians have tried to direct the blame onto people who break their backs earning the right to live in this country. People of both parties are now up in arms about "all these stinkin' illegals" stealing the jobs of righteous citizens..."criminals" lowering our wages and crowding our medical facilities.

I'm sick of hearing it! The Democratic Party used to stand for the solidarity of workers, wherever they might live. Any issue involving an attack on labor used to be their call to arms. Now, in defense of their corporate masters, suddenly all the woes of the working man in this country are to be found in the Chicano "problem". They've shifted the blame to Latinos, when in fact it's the very nature of the system to enslave the working class and pit the middle class against them.

Keep us divided and we will only fail!

Viva La Huelga! Unity is Strength!

The Workers United Will Never Be Defeated!
