I just saw a heavy immigration ad
It had this woman crying and talking to her son and then this police officer comes and handcuffs her and drags off. The little boy is left standing there alone. Then it says to support immigration reform and says to calls your senators.

1. Even when I agree with an issue
I really, truly hate that kind of blatant heart-string abuse.

6. A part of the "legislation" addresses this issue
There is/was a proposal that children would only be automatic citizens IF both parents are already citizens. The "anchor" citizen has always been a facet of immigration, regardless of the nationality of the immigrants.. If you had a relative already here, it was easier to bring more family members in..

In a neo-con version, that child in the ad would have been sent back with Mom..

The hardcore answer to what we have going on is MANDATORY schools (won't happen-costs money) where immigrants are sent to learn english and get help in assimilation. The reason most never assimilate, is that they go to already established enclaves where they don't HAVE to learn english, and they rely on the resilience of the children to be their interpretors..

This would take the pressure off a lot of schools who have to hire bi-lingual. tri-lingual teachers and provide a lot of catch-up work on an already stripped budget.

Lots of Hispanic children are over-burdened,and become the de facto adults of the family.. They are the ones who can read the gas bill, deal with the landlords, talk to the doctors, and deal with the english-speaking world because their elders cannot..

7. There is a tortillarilla/restaurant here in SoCal
By the name of "Diana's" and it sports a picture of the cutest darn little girl you ever saw. My grandfather knew this family and he said they started the business and were about to loose it because they were not citizens... but little Diana was born here... so they put the entire business in her name.

I don't have a problem with forcing the kids to learn English... they can learn a lot easier than their parents. My daughter went to a Montessori academy and was in a Spanish immersion program... she speaks like a native now. Seriously, native speakers who hear her speak the language think she must have learned Spanish as her first language.

I'm so torn on these issues. I grew up in Lomita and went to high school in Harbor City, I grew up with these people, ate in their homes, had birthday parties and slumber parties with their kids.

Hard, hard, hard.

8. We live in an area with a huge Hispanic community and I have
NO problem with the people wither. My son's fiancee comes from an immigrant family (Her dad was born in Mexico)..but the first thing immigrants used to do was learn english, or try to.

When things are going great in the economy, no one questions much, but whenever people get scared, they "choose up sides" and all the hard feelings come bubbling up..

As long as Mexico is allowed to "skate" on this issue, we can never solve it.. Our government is too scared to deal with the problem where it starts.. MEXICO..

9. I'm beginning to think you are right...
In reality, it would be in everyone's best interest to at least learn the language. We all save money on printing things in more than one language, all children will have an even playing field academically, there are safety concerns as well.

I wouldn't think of moving to Italy or France without learning the language. Maybe I should apply the same standards to others that I apply to myself.

2. What? So they have outed themselves insensitive jerks...
I am going to guess that the ad didn't cover what happens to the child?

The commercial doesn't make sense!!

5. Then they should have used a REAL
scenario...like the 4 year old little girl they tried to deport even though her parents were eligible to stay.

Show them taking away a little kid in handcuffs.
