The issue that will take the Dems down in 2006 and 2008 is AMNESTY
The American people do not want it and the Republicans will be able to spin their "guest worker program" to appear to be non-amensty. Sorry, folks. I thought we had a fighting chance until I watched Lou Dobbs tonight and heard the Dem position on immigration. Amnesty trumps Iraq, period!

Oh, well.

3. I agree.
Immigration is the ONLY area that I and my rightwing relatives are in agreement and we are in disagreement with almost all of our respective party's leaders on this issue.

5. I've said it before and will say it again
We are Democrats. We are FOR social justice, humane treatment, and civil rights.

The wingnuts (O'LOOFAH, MALKIN, TANCREDO, the Minutemen) have been spinning the illegal immigration issue their way for at least three years: Paranoia, walls, vigilante-ism, scare tactics. They cover their REAL, underlying motive--------doh, RACISM----- under their supposed concerns for "national security" and "enforcing the law". Funny how it's the Brown, uh, I mean, Southern border that is their concern, not the Northern border where the 9-11 terrorists entered the U.S.

The Dems need to frame it like this: We are FOR national security; we are AGAINST illegality of whatever sort; we are FOR social justice, humane treatment, and civil rights. Same as with the CHOICE (not "abortion") issue.

9. Thank you, UTUSN! I totally agree. I fear before this is over
everyone will sound and act like bigots. Is that what we want? Why can't Dems prove to be the compassionate ones while still introducing some legal, logical measures.

11. We can not condone the breaking of our laws aby 20 million people
and expect to be able to use breaking the law against the Bushbots. I am not against immigration. I am for my children and grandchildren's well-being in this country. I don't believe that amnesty for 20million people who broke our laws to get into this country and who are daily taking jobs from citizens and helping to erode our standard of living by forcing pay and benefits off the table and helping to bust our unions that have been responsible for giving working men and women a chance at making a decent living is what the Dems should be fighting for. What the hell about us? We abide by the law, we pay our taxes, we vote, we work, and we are kind generous people. But must we give away our children's future in the name of PRETENDING TO BE FOR JUSTICE AND CIVIL RIGHTS for people who are not even citizens when many of our own citizens are denied these?

End of rant.

20. Now, who is "pretending to be for justice & civil rights"? & where
did I advocate condoning "the breaking of our laws". I didn't even mention amnesty, for starters. The rest of the rant is Nativism 101, same as was used on each new group from the beginning.

19. Agreed!

Very well put! :hi: You know things are getting disgusting when the phrases "DU this poll" and "freep this poll" are sending people out to vote the same way.

22. You have an American public with an attention span of a few seconds
This is the day and age of sound bites. While you're saying that, the repukes will simply say, "Democrats want to give amnesty to illegal immigrants that are taking your jobs". Then they will pull out a couple of quotes, and that will be that. Dems lose, repukes win, and then there is no longer any chance for social justice, humane treatment, or civil rights.

You have to get down & dirty and beat them at their own game. The days of feel good statements like yours are long gone.

8. They plan to pump this bigger and hit on every gay measure they can.
And with electronic voting machines and a complicit media they will just manage to "squeak by" yet again.

10. Harry Reid is working hard to use AMNESTY to destroy all Dem gains.
He's a really nice guy, but he really doesn't have a clue.

12. What will bring the Dems down is continuing to ignore their BASE
and refusing to address issues like wages and offshoring.

The immigration thing will sort itself out if they attack CHEAP LABOR CONSERVATISM for what it is.

14. Democrats won elections
when they were the "party of American workers."

Do you know how many times I hear that?

American workers are angry as hell, & no one is backing them.

Repubs will help their corporate masters for more cheap labor.

Dems will help foreigners over Americans. The politicos are all wealthy, & have no idea of what working people are up against.

Harry Reid says he will block any bill that does not contain amnesty. He is representing Nevada's big hotels & casinos that need endless cheap labor.

The elections can be won by politicians who will discuss this economy & discuss wages, the shrinking middle class, & the direction we are headed to.
