Sometimes size doesn't matter.

Small turnout; strong belief

A half-dozen Gallup High School students walked out of classes and across the campus Monday carrying signs protesting U.S. involvement in Iraq and demanding the resignation of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. The students said they were disappointed with the turn out for the protest. They had expected more than 40 students to participate.

GALLUP, NM — Sometimes size doesn't matter.

That was the case on Monday when six students at Gallup High School briefly walked out of the school carrying banners protesting the war in Iraq.

Mike Butler, one of the organizers of the protest, said the group had hoped to have more students involved in the protest, but many opted to stay in their classes, possibly because of fear of some kind of punishment by the school district.

Butler and the five others walked out of the school building to the security gate in front of the school to talk about their concerns about the way the war was going and to plead their case that the time has come to end the war and allow the troops to come home.

"We totally support our troops," said Butler, who added that he and the others have been talking about this walkout as a way to show their feelings about the way the war in Iraq is being handled.

2. My best guess

is many school-aged kids do not like this administration's policies. My boys are grown but I have a friend with a boy in Jr. High and he is rabidly fanatic about hating Bush. My friend is largely apolitical. Interesting. These children will be the ones facing a draft. I'll bet they don't omit the girls either.
