2. Ha!! This is wonderful!!
I hope these are his actual phone numbers. I have to decide whether to have regular or caffiene free pop in a few moments. Maybe I should give this butt-head a call.

27. As the artist wrote...
The woman who drew this cartoon found the phone numbers on the South Dakota website that lists the information for Senators. It's legit.

I can't decide whether I should wear a hoodie or not.
Oops, guess I can't ask you since you're female and I,being the same, wouldn't have a clue.
Hmm, maybe he would know?

6. I have mixed feelings about this.

I can't help but feel that we should be confronting their ideas head on and explaining why they're wrong, rather than resorting to personal harrassement. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

9. Certainly,
but I don't think that encouraging that is the intention of the OP.

But certainly, I would have no qualms whatsoever about encouraging anyone who actually wants to discuss the abortion issue, or any other relevant one, seriously and civilly with Mr Napoli to try phoning him to do so (although my prejudice from what I know of the conservatives of South Dakota is that they are unlikely either to learn anything of value from him or to convince him to change his mind about anything).

34. Donald, if someone started bossing your penis around
I think you might get testy and make a few phone calls too.

With all due respect to your bad vibes, this is a girl thing.

Our eggs and ovaries are on the line now, we are going to have to go way beyond civil. Look where being civil has gotten us. Forced pregnancies and coat hangers.

And perhaps you are too young to remember the coat hanger days.
Was a very bad.

35. I don't agree that being right justifies hitting below the belt,

because I don't see any way of setting a standard that says "yes, you're right, this man is doing a very bad thing so harrassing him personally is acceptable" that doesn't then allow the rightwingers to turn round and say that since they think that allowing abortion is a very bad thing they're going to personally harrass pro choicers.

It's a perfectly consistent and defensible position to say that its acceptable for all sides to harrass those they disagree with, and I think there are some strong arguments in favour of it, but I think that on balance I prefer the alternative, because I don't think the harrassement will achieve anything except making the harrasser feel better and hardening the harrassees prejudices that their opponents are beyond the pale.

I don't think one can make reference to objective standards of right and wrong in deciding what is and isn't a legitimate political tactic. If it's legitimate for us it's legitimate for them, and vice versa.

I do fully agree with you that the South Dakota abortion ban will be a very bad thing indeed if it comes into force, though.

37. This is not harassment, this is karma
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 08:54 AM by cassiepriam
They are hitting below our belts, literally.
For every action there is a reaction.

These men think they know better than women and their physicians, and have taken away our power. So be it. But they can't have it both ways. They want power over my body, OK. But they have to take the good with the bad.

Sir, get out of your head into your gut. Imagine a law being passed that orders you to use or not use your penis in a certain way. Imagine how that would feel to you. Imagine how violated and angry you would be. Imagine how you would feel if women started patronizing you and telling you to calm down when you got angry about it.

Instead of lecturing us sir, imagine how this would feel if it were your penis and gonads on the line.

Women's rights were not secured by playing by the rules. They were won by courageous and brave women who risked their lives to rock the power structure.

You seem to be an intelligent and a thoughtful person, I pray that you use your gifts to help us. I send those prayers to right now, I hope you can feel them.

40. I'm afraid that I think my response

has to be to defend the relative merits of the head compared with the gut.

I don't know whether I'd be able or willing to try and be objective if I were female and/or American/from South Dakota, and it were my interests on the line, but I don't think that the possibility that I might not invalidates my point.

I fully agree that breaking the rules of a specific time and place is not infrequently justified, but my objection to this is not that it breaks any rules - it doesn't, it's perfectly legitimate - but that it's a tactic that I would disapprove of if it were used by a right-winger, and as such I think I am morally bound to disapprove of it being used by left-wingers.

On the other hand, it clearly *is* in a good cause, and as such while I can muster the energy to post reproachfully on an internet discussion forum, protecting South Dakotan anti-abortion campaigners from impolite phone calls is unlikely to reach my list of top ten causes to crusade any time in the immediate future. Possibly some day when I have more free time...

41. This IS confronting the ideas head on and explaining why they're wrong!
That's exactly what this does. The point is, the guy in SD has fought for a decision which has repercussions he was either too lazy or stupid to consider. This is pointing it out to him. If he's going to make the case that women can't be responsible to make decisions about their body, then what can they be responsible for?
