Antonin Scalia: The barbarian on the supreme court.
Scalia's son was in Iraq, therefore, to his way of thinking, no one in Guantanamo is entitled to a trial.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/shared-gen/ap/US_Supreme_Court/Scalia_Guantanamo.html

Speaking in front of a European audience, he said, "If (the prisoner) was captured by my army on a battlefield, (Guantanamo) is where he belongs. I had a son on that battlefield and they were shooting at my son and I'm not about to give this man who was captured in a war a full jury trial."

He went on to tell the European audience he was "astounded" at their "hypocrisy."

Talk about hypocrisy. This is about a case coming before the supreme court and since Scalia's son having been in Iraq is influencing his opinion, he should recuse himself. It's been shown time and again that most prisoners in Guantanamo were people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or innocent people turned in by someone with a grudge.

If foreigners held all Americans to Scalia's so-called standards, we'd be screaming our heads off. I hope to someday see Scalia in the Hague along with Bush, Cheney, Rove, et al. receiving a trial he would deny others.

2. Scalia thinks he's God. So does Bush. I say let's lock them
In a room and let them fight it out. We'll put whoever survives on trial and make sure it's an honest one.

5. Where is his own life mentioned as a standard in the Constitution?
He is insane. And a hypocrite of exponential degree to boot.

6. I am astounded that this man has no grasp of the consequences of torture.
Torturing the enemy (any enemy) only makes them fight harder and more savagely. If prisoners are treated humanly, the enemy can not illicit righteous outrage and spur their followers to further violence. By torturing prisoners, we declare that our way of life, our system of justice, is a front for power and control.

Torture only motivates our enemy and distances our allies.

7. Scalia and Pope Prada* (as Ratzinger has been nicknamed by Italian wags)
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 08:24 AM by SpiralHawk
What a pair.

Perfect compadres for the Skull-&-Boner-in-Chief of the "Homeland."

As for me, I not making no mindfuck psychological move to no steenkin "Homeland."

I choose to remain a loyal, and liberal citizen of the good, old United States of America (that's the US of A for you Freepers who have forgotten).

* Pope Prada insists on the fanciest, most cutting edge designs in his vestments. Apparently part of the new church doctrine is the BELIEF that one can not overemphasize the importance of High Fashion when ministering to the hungy, naked, and homeless of the planet.

20. I guess there's a silver lining everywhere. If it weren't for Jesus, how
would the new Pope be paying for his Prada shoes? Well, what the hell. This Pope is taking Max Bialistock's advice: "If you got it, flaunt it."

(Max Bialistock is the main character in Mel Brooks' "The Producers.")

8. So if his son is captured, it's OK for the enemy to torture him?
There's a special place in Hell....

9. Mr Scalia, please explain how a person can be imprisoned legally.
1) That person has committed a crime under our laws and is being held for trial, or has been convicted in an open court in a trial by a jury.

2) That person participated in a war against our armed forces, and must be treated as a Prisoner Of War under the Geneva Conventions and the UN Charter.

There is no third option.

Its appalling that a US Supreme Court Justice fails to understand the law. Its appalling that he should toe the party line AGAINST the Constitution.

10. I forgot to mention in the OP that the case is about Osama's chauffeur.
Make that former chauffeur. I can just see him driving Bin Laden around a battlefield, one hand on the wheel and an AK47 in the other hand, mowing down American troops.

Why don't we just get Scalia's driver and lynch him for chauffeuring around a prick?

13. Scalia went duck hunting with Cheney during a supreme court case in which
Cheney was involved.

He probably didn't recuse himself because Cheney threatened to shoot him in the face if he did.

Either schizophrenic or the worst sort of hypocrite. Probably both.

17. My Son is in Iraq and I don't believe in torture
because I would prefer if he were imprisoned, they would treat him fairly, like we should be doing our prisoners... I guess it is just the person, not the situation that would make one want torture....

21. People would not have been shooting at his son
if we had not illegally invaded their country. He calls it "shooting at my son." I am sure they call it defending their homes against the invaders.

22. This actually reminds me of GWB's assumption that because
Hussein "tried to kill dad" he had a right to use the American military and taxpayers' money to seek revenge.

Now, my daughter was hit by a car while jogging in Dublin a few weeks ago. (No, she wasn't seriously hurt--just scraped up.) The more I think about it, the more I think we should invade Ireland. I mean, I really love my daughter, and some Irish guy hit her with a car! She wasn't even shooting at him, as Scalia's son probably was shooting at some Iraqis, and she hadn't fought a war with him, as Bush's dad had with Hsusein. She was just innocently jogging, so there was even less justification for hitting her with a car.

We need to strike Ireland premptively, so we can fight careless Irish drivers over there rather than over here, where even more innocent American joggers could be hit by Irish drivers.
